The Black Screen In Center Field

I remember when this stadium opened, there was a problem with Tiger Stadium being a distraction, or somehow messing with the players visual orientation. If I'm not senile, the black screen was in place by the second season.
Does anyone recall the problem? As Tiger Stadium is probably a third or so of a mile away, in a straight line, what was happening?
Thanks for helping an older guy remember and understand.

you want a dark background behind the pitcher so you don’t lose the baseball.

We want our hitters coming from high school to be comfortable and familiar with the backdrop

It’s called a “batter’s eye”

What are you talking about. There's always a batters eye

That’s called the “batters eye”….simply a dark uniform surface so the batter can see the ball.

That screen is so oppressed.

It is ugly but yes there’s a reason

Necessary, but ours looks cheap. Seems like we could have a black LSU or tigers eye on it.

It’s called the batters eye and it’s been there since the stadium opened. When it opened it was smaller/lower than it is now.
It was actually one of the first complaints about the cheapness of the new box because it was essentially a cheap tarp.
Here is pic from opening night of the new Box

That would defeat the purpose

Seasons come and season's go and the LSUAD refuses to build a solid one.

Are batters eyes not required? I figured it was a regulation.
In regards to ours being a cheap looking black tarp, I thought the story was that a utility line ran through the area and they couldn’t construct a more typical eye (because of the weight??) anyone?

Yeah. Its required. It’s there though. Zoom into the pic and see the garbage bag looking thing right behind the outfield wall.
