Lol at these posters thinking that Southern’s band should make this list. Southern’s band is total trash.

Top 10 would be dominated by the Big 10. Great music programs up there

I hate to admit it but I think that the best band in the SEC is Auburn. They are a very big band and are really loud. Their marching style is pretty impressive to. I find their pre game show to be one of the best. The crowd goes wild and the band is loud as hell when that eagle is released. I like their fight song too. Go to you tube and watch Auburn's band when they beat Bama. I love the video where Auburn beats Bama on the last play of the game and a football player comes over and leads the band. Having an instate rival is pretty cool. I really never cared for Tulane being LSU's in state rival during the old days. Most of the Tulane fans are people that live outside the state of Louisiana. A true instate rival is having the fans of both schools living in the same state. Florida, Fla. State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss. There are many more that I did not mention.

aTm is cool the first time you see it. I don't need to see the same performance every damn game.

LSU band has been crippled by attrition and lack of funds.
Southern band is a bunch of nonsense with hood music.
OSU band has Salvation Army uniforms. Dotting the I is trite and tired.
Stanford has been canceled by pc culture.
Bama is good
USC is great
A and M if they were real military would be OK but really just gay.

Florida State, Texas and North Texas have the best band programs in the south. People don’t see UNT on TV, but that is one of the biggest music schools in the US.

North Texas is one of the best non-conservatory music programs in the country. They are world renowned for the jazz program.

The worst thing that could’ve happened to TGBFTL was getting taken over by the School of Music. It was a cash grab by FKA and Todd Queen, and Tiger Band hasn’t been the same since. LSU should move the band back under the control of the athletic department by designating them as a spirit group, like the cheerleaders and Tiger Girls.

-Big Ten bands are typically a cut above other conference’s bands. I’d say it’s like SEC and football. Top to bottom, you’ll find the most good bands in that conference.

-Texas A&M marches as well as anybody in the nation, granted they have the military background and they do the same drills over and over. They sounds among the worst in the South/Southwest. I don’t think you can major in music there, which doesn’t help things.

-I can appreciate what HBCU bands offer, but it’s more of a production and less of a marching band. Their marching style and sound quality lends itself to a lesser performance than what you’d see from a typical marching band. Their drumlines can also be quite different. With that said, they can definitely entertain. It’s tough to compare what Southern, Grambling, FAMU, etc do to what Ohio State does.

-Stanford is a joke. They don’t offer anything redeeming from a musical or marching sense. Their greatest contribution is pranking Notre Dame by doing a show mocking the Irish Potato Famine...

Apparently, you didn't see Jacksonville State when they brought the entire 400 member "Marching Southerners" to Tiger Stadium about 5 years ago.

No college marching band is anywhere close to JSU.

Ole Miss and Florida.

The only bands on your list that would be on a Top Ten list would be Ohio State and Texas A&M, strictly from an entertainment point of view.

Current GBFTL. Not anywhere on any "Top Marching Bands in the Country" list. That program is just nowhere near what it used to be. Not even close. (Just like nobody is close to Jacksonville State)

GBFTL and Madison Scout Alum here. I'm stating this as fact too, not opinion.......

LSU’s band is like Notre Dame football. Once the best and now living off past reputation.

The current GBFTL is like the college marching band equivalent of LSU football under Curley Hallman.

It's absolutely nowhere the program it used to be thanks to former LSU SOM Dean Lawrence Captain, (Pissed off Linda Morehouse, which prompted her to leave for Illinois) current SOM Dean Todd Queen, current DOB Damon Talley and former incompetent LSU AD Joe "Snow Peas" Alleva.

All have contributed to the decline of the GBFTL........

I’m a TGBFTL section leader from 84-88 so I’m very biased.

Back in the day, I’d say that we were solid top 5. I’d put these in no specific order from that era:

LSU
tOSU
Michigan
USC Trojans
FSU

Currently, I’d have to say that LSU has fallen out of the top 5. They’re still very good but not at the level we once were. Too many staff changes and they’re playing commercially arranged songs which I really dislike. Everybody plays the same music so originality declines significantly. Musicianship has clearly declined.

I watch their rehearsals online and they are very scripted. They don’t seem to take the time to stop and correct problems as they occur. That really bugs me. Frank Wickes and Linda Moorehouse wouldn’t hesitate to stop and correct any kind of problems. They would also often just talk to us on random things. Those are some very fond memories for anybody who was a member in that era.

Modern era in no order:

tOSU
UF
Norte Dame
Texas
FSU

Just my .02

Ohio St's got my vote, followed by USC with that heavy brass section, Florida St also a heavy brass component.

Edit: Forgot about TAMU, drills are the most unique in the country.

LSU was much better under their old director IMO.

No SWAC or MEAC bands?

Those bands are the best.

Florida’s band is not good. They’re big and loud, but they’re not good. People forget that Tiger Band is a lot smaller than most bands in the SEC.

My son is a Uf student and prior to this year, I’ve seen them quite a few times in recent years. They’re pretty good these days. Much better than they used to be. They have a really strong bottom up sound quality. I don’t know if they’ve added more brass or what but, they’re noticeably better. I focus on sound and musicianship more than drill.

One thing is that their stadium is rarely full so their sound travels better through the stadium.
