The Alabama Persona

Why do Bama fans walk around like they are the royalty of college football? They had a run in the seventies and have won 2 NC in the last 32 years. It boggles the mind.

Same reason Dallas Cowboy fans are douchebags. They mostly live in the far past.

Even our best football players in state are falling victim to this. I wish our program has this much respect

Bear Bryant = 185 scholarships, no more and no more championships.

It was admittedly a little more than a "run in the 70's."

Prior to 1973 before there was scholarship limitations on football, Bama made a great "business decision". They signed and invested in ALL the good players they could put there hands on. Many just to sit on the bench so other players could not have them. Because of that decision, Bama dominated back in the day. When the NCAA leveled the playing field by limiting scholarships for all university football programs, Bama started coming back to the pack.
But, the "prestige" of the program was already established. Great foresight by their administration and athletic programs back in the day.

Bc they still think it is 1978

Because they've got nothing else. They derive their entire sense of self worth from the on field exploits of 20 year olds who don't even know they exist.
Did you see Roll Tide, War Eagle? What a shameful display of humanity. The only decent person in that circus was the arborist from Auburn.

They have to put up some kind of front. After all, they live in Tuscaloosa, the world's largest trailer park.

yep no professional teams in the state and meeting an actual bama alum is a rare find as well.

Most countries have a national identity - gained through shared experiences of its people and passed down in oral and written histories. This defines what they're proudest of and what makes them great. Greece as the birthplace of democracy. Russia as heavy-handed xenophobic slavs who think they rule the world.
The United States is a bit different in that we're very young as countries go and our "national" identity comes from the state we call home. Californians treasure their coastline and mountains and redwood forests. Iowans are batsh*t over corn. We (Louisianians) have a fairly rich history with the Acadian French and Spanish influence. What does Alabama have?
Answer: a history of being very good at football. There's not much else to define their identity.
It's all they got.

I walk around like a normal person and can talk intelligently about football without being a douchebag.
The way I see it, people are going to talk and you can't stop that. You gotta learn to let it roll off your back and keep going. Sometimes you gotta ignore the ones that are acting that way and just worry about the ones that seem to be good people.
Every team has fans that seem to be ignorant and just want to sit around and beat their chest and scream we're awesome and whatever else. But if you actually stop and think about it, there are more fans out there that just love college football and everything that goes with it and those are the ones that you can walk up to and talk about the game with or go to their tailgate and have a beer and have a good time.
We lost on November 5th and I never expected us to be playing for the NC but things happened and the teams ahead of us lost causing us to back up to #2 so it is what it is. All I know is that I'll be watching the game and cheering for Bama. If we win then we win and I can be humble about it. If we lose then we lose and I can still sit and talk football and get ready for next season.
At the end of the day I don't get caught up in all the bullcrap and trash talking because I still have a fiance, I still have a family, I still have a job, and I'm still breathing.
Don't let idiot fans get you all worked up.

I have a TON of respect for that program but the fans kill me. Walking around the Sugar Bowl screaming "Roll Tide" (which sounds like Re-Tard in that southern drawl) after every single play kills me. I get it. You represent. Now sit down and let me watch Mich/VT.

I wouldn't say that. I'm just trying to say it like it is though. One thing I hate is being lumped in or stereotyped because of the script A beside my username. I just try to let people know that not all Bama fans are idiots, and can actually talk some football without dwelling on the past. I love Alabama football more than a lot of people I know but it's just a game and life is a lot more important. I hate when Bama loses and I may not talk to anyone for a little while afterwards but life goes on.
We had some LSU fans from the OT come to our tailgate this year in Tuscaloosa and I wanted them to have a good time and leave knowing that not all Bama fans are idiots, rednecks, or trash. We fed them some good food and they had a good time. I'd welcome them all back again and I hope that they would be willing to come back. I can take a good joke and I can kid around, but some people take it entirely too far (aka - Harvey Updyke) and that's just sad. I've never made any SEC road trips and I'm sure that if I did I would run into some crappy fans, but I bet there would be a lot more decent and good folks there.

I agree, that was a prime example of delusional fans! And come on, naming children after coaches, and "Alley Bamy" for your daughters name?? I understand all Gumps are not that way, but obviously enough are to warrant a 1 hr. tv special !!!
