I know they can’t get it their freshman year but it will be well known the money they will make day one of their second year.

What does this mean? Brian Thomas Jr. Has had a NIL deal with Neighbors Credit Union all year his freshman year.

Doesn't matter how many rules they broke, there is no regulation in the lawless land of the NCAA.

That said, I enjoy Florida being on this list. Napier's two-toned wack fade will go perfectly with a nice pair of jorts

Nothing will happen. Nothing.

LSU either needs to pony up and start playing the same game or we will get left behind.

They had to shut that down quick. They need to stop this NIL completely and put a cap on it

They can't. Ive said here though that I thought schools would get together and agree on guidelines. I believe that's coming soon.

Schools can agree on whatever they want, but those agreements don't supersede state or federal laws. Not to mention those school agreements were just deemed illegal by SCOTUS in the Alston case.

I'm telling you, once college football and men's basketball players are declared to be workers of their schools who can unionize and negotiate collective rights (which will happen within the next year), what we knew as commercial college athletics is done.

What are the rules? Does anyone really know?

Not really. The NCAA was forced to basically punt and defer to state laws. So if the school is in a state with an NIL law on the books (all of the above-referenced schools are) then that state’s laws take precedence over the NCAA rules.

At that point it comes down to a reading of the various states’ laws. There are a few common themes though:
- The athlete must provide some form of service for the compensation.
- Compensation for NIL must be in line with “fair market value,” which is admittedly somewhat subjective.
- Compensation cannot be provided in exchange for attendance/enrollment at a particular institution, or be contingent upon athletic performance.
- The school itself cannot be the source of funds.

I don’t know if every single state’s law addresses all of these points, but the ones I’ve seen do. The states themselves are unlikely to do much IMO (could you imagine the state of Louisiana, for example, going after LSU athletics?) but the NCAA will presumably try to somehow hold schools to their states’ laws.

What remains to be seen is whether the NCAA still has teeth after their loss at the Supreme Court. I’m sure it’s a tricky position for them - if they try to make an example out of a “blue blood” and come down too hard, it could be the straw that breaks the camels back and leads to the big schools breaking away from the NCAA.

OTOH, if they look the other way or let egregious offenses go with a slap on the wrist, it will spiral out of control.

Guess that means the NCAA is about to bury Missouri.
