Yes, it's more fun to look at how our bats were looking pretty good and our players never quit. I know the competition wasn't great, but they never quit. I was impressed with the grit at the plate.
But just as impressed as I was about the hitting in the clutch, our bullpen is horse shite. I can't remember the last time LSU swept any team, and I came away thinking we might be worse than I thought. It's not even pitchers missing spots in key situations...they literally can't throw a strike. I can't see how anybody feels remotely good about the Miss St match up this weekend. I hope we see a major turn around in the bullpen. If not, we may get swept.
Dunn has his work cut out for him.....and so does PM.

I came away after this weekend thinking:

If LSU can somehow find a bullpen they will be a damn good team because everything else is there.

If they don't they will not have a winning SEC record and will not host a regional.

I guess we will see how it unfolds..

There is no such thing as a terrible sweep. It's a sweep, and just because UTSA isn't good in football, doesn't mean we didn't sweep a solid baseball team.

The bullpen was not good, and it's a valid concern. However, our starting pitching and hitting looks more than good enough. We have guys we can depend on in the pen, and they will have to get more consistent. We have guys who are not very good in the pen, and they shouldn't see any meaningful innings in SEC play. We are figuring those things out now.

I really think stretching the starter’s pitch counts is going to help the bullpen out more than people are realizing. You are talking about taking 3-4 innings a weekend out of the bullpen’s hands and into your starters.

Still need to find the reliable guys but with this rotation it’s only going to take finding 3 maybe 4 of those guys. The more the better of course.

They will struggle against good arms. Leaky bullpen is troublesome because that was supposed to be a strength.

Floyd, Money, Edwards have shown flashes of being guys we can depend on. Need to be more consistent.

Hilliard has looked good in his last few outings. He needs to be more consistent. Same can be said for our lefties.

Fontenot needs to get his shite together.

I look for Hellmers to get less innings in the midweeks, to be available on the weekends. Time will tell how he will look against tougher competition.

George and Vietmier don't belong throwing a single meaningful pitch for LSU.

There is a large number of options, we just need them to be consistent. And when one is throwing well, then we don't need to mess around with it. Ride the hot hand, because there is no guarantee the next guy will have it that day.

It was? Outside of Fontenot, this pen was going to be largely dependant on freshman arms.

Cool weather returns to the box this weekend so I don't think the ball will be flying out like this past weekend
Will have to better at situational hitting to win this series

Anytime you win it builds confidence. If you can win and not do something well, that's a good sign. They'll get it fixed.

That UTSA team had some talent. They will be a pain in the butt for some teams this year

That offense in a regional would not be fun to go against
Have no idea where they stack up in their conference
They had some decent arms that were touching 90 all weekend but like LSU had some bullpen issues

Beck was supposed to be a big guy out of the pen and to a lesser extent so was Vietmeir.

I'm sure they'll look at pulling Hellmers and Edwards from their mid week roles and putting them into the weekend pen. Seems like an easy solution that could immediately address the problem

While we didn't play our best and we had some major issues, there is no such thing as a terrible sweep in baseball. I'll definitely take it.

This is the key right here. Fontenot goes back to doing Fontenot things and the entire bullpen gets set in place in my opinion.

My main takaway was our bullpen sucks and UTSA is the new UC-Irvine until further notice.

Poor guys just couldn't put us away

You really just need 3-4 guys that you can rely on out of the bullpen, and maybe 1-2 other situational guys. Sure, you'll have outings when the starter gets yanked early and it gets hairy, but you generally expect 5-7 from your starter and couple of innings from 1-2 other guys.

With that said, I don't really trust anybody yet. We were supposed to ride Beck and Fontenot, then sprinkle in some young arms and lefties. It just hasn't worked out that way yet, but starters have also been pulled early for pitch count.

Yeah
Don't look for Hellmers to throw much against SLU
He and Edwards will be first two out of the pen during SEC play
Good news is the three starters all went deep into the game and you can push them a little further - up to 100 pitches in sec play

Then you can use midweek to get some of these other guys back to being effective
I can't imagine Kaminer and Veitmeire forgot how to pitch
Beck would definitely help as well
Story, Coleman, Money and Brady have all shown they can do it, just need to be more consistent
