Not sure if it is true (or even if the timeline matches up), but the rumor a few years after the crash was that he was on his way to recruit Lawrence Taylor.

Nah, LT would have been going into his SR season at UNC. He was actually on his way back to BR from Shreveport when supposedly the cabin loss pressure, causing all occupants to lose conciousness and the plane veered off course and crashed into the Atlantic.

I wasn't born but My dad still talks about how great he was going to be for LSU. Its weird to me seeing his picture in the 75 years of LSU football and reading what should of been a very long career. The best is when he talks about winning maybe a national championship. I those days it was alot further from reality than it is today.

The plane he was in either lost pressure at altitude or had a carbon monoxide leak. Everyone in it presumably died with the plane still in flight. It crashed in the Atlantic Ocean.
Never found it. Speaking of bizarre LSU plane incidents, does anybody remember Butch Baum?

Experts say his crash and Payne Stewart's are from similar causes.
The crash led to LSU hiring Stovall which led to Arnsbarger which led to Archer which led to Hallman who only got there because Brett Farve covered for his incompetence. From there we had Dinardo then Saban and now Miles.
When replacing Arnsbarger LSU also interviewed a guy named Spurrier but turned him down for Archer. Hindsight is 20/20.

Well if my time had to come on a plane ride, I would want it to be like this.
Like already said, who knows what could have been with him and the program.

Bo Rein was the hot up and coming coach. His place did crash in Cary, NC over his old house. He would have resurrected our program.
It crashed in the Atlantic, not around his home.

LSU also interviewed two other coaches besides Spurrier - a guy named Shanahan and a guy named Rutigliano......
But a contingent of players led by Hodson pleaded with the LSU BOS to hire Archer. Wow.

Only two died - Rein and pilot Lewis Benscotter.

After reading this post, I had to remind myself that what seems like common knowledge to me as a 40 year old LSU fan might be not-so-common for the younger folks, whose numbers increase daily.
The Bo Rein incident was huge news in its day. It's interesting how memories of events fade over time.
However, I would like to encourage younger fans to take the time to read into LSU's history a bit. Even if it's not really your thing, I guarantee you that you will find something interesting in LSU's football past. Better yet, look some of these guys up. Their stories are incredible. I've been fortunate to sit and talk with players who played for LSU in every decade since 1920. It's some of the best time I ever spent... and trust me... your ability to talk to these old guys about events in their past can instantly earn their appreciation.

Bo Rine was killed in a plane crash on a recruiting trip. Never coached a day for LSU< Came from North Carolina ST. Was a good coach would have loved to see him at LSU.

" A continuing tradition at Ohio State is that at the end of every season, the team votes to award one teammate the "Bo Rein Most Inspirational Player Award."
An interesting tidbit about the Bo Rein Most Inspirational Player Award (mentioned in the previous Wikipedia link) is Bo Pelini won that award in 1990 at Ohio State. I remember Pelini speaking about his award when he spoke to us during an alumni dinner at Ralph and Kacoo in his first year at LSU.

I was a junior in high school in BR and still vividly remember my dad waking me up to go to school with the words "Hey get up. Bo Rein is dead."
Was a very surreal way to start the day.

Dad obviously had that special touch. Did he also tell you about the monsters in the closet?
