Tackling...Bring in the best defensive Australian Rugby League analyst for 1 month

After watching one of the worst defensive efforts by an LSU team, I kept coming back to the number of flat out missed tackles. Here is a suggestion. We know Australian Aussie rules trained kickers can punt but the best football tacklers are Australian Rugby LEAGUE players. Watch 5 minutes of NSW Blues vs Queensland Reds in any State of Origin match and you will see what I mean. Tackling is the backbone of the game. Bring in the best defensive Australian Rugby League analyst for 1 month in spring or fall camp and I promise they won’t miss as many tackles again. Hell some would come for next to nothing, a few shrimp po boys and a trip to Bourbon St.

You really think we need to import players from another country to “tackle” this problem?

I posted this in another thread. It would only take 30 minutes for the team to get better at tackling. They just need to watch this video by Pete Carroll on Rugby tackling:

Imagine how much better they would be if they also practiced it in addition to watching it.

Do you know why Rugby players are great tacklers? Because anything other than a form tackle is illegal. A CB flying in with their shoulder and clipping the legs out from under a TE (which happens every other play in American FB) is an auto penalty in rugby.

This forces rugby players to be amazing form tacklers.

Wish they would implement this in football...would probably eliminate a number of blow out knees and ankles.

I see desperate attempts to figure out what is wrong with our defense. Maybe, we need to let the whole thing play out by letting the head coach and defensive coordinator do their jobs. The AD will step in and insist on firing someone if it digresses much more. Quit being nervous Nellys.

I've thought this way for years.

I cringe every time a CB goes at a receivers knees, not trying to actually tackle, but just to knock the ball carrier down.

And DBs don't try to actually break up passes, they just deliver a blow.

I wish these plays were illegal. Make defenders actually have arms out trying to make a real tackle. And require DBs to actually make a play on the ball when trying to break up a pass.

It’s different when trying to tackle off a block vs open field.

My son plays high school rugby and I watch the tackling drills frequently. The coaches are from the US East Coast and South Africa, and the techniques they teach are top notch. These kids wrap up and never miss tackles in open space. Several of the players said they were nauseated watching the tackles in the last LSU game. Bringing a rugby coach in for some tackling sessions might seem weird, but it definitely couldn't hurt.

In rugby, it is against the rules to tackle with anything but your arms. You have to wrap the player to the ground. Wouldn't be the worst idea.

How this has 22 downvotes is beyond me - it is a fantastic suggestion and one that, frankly, I'm surprised most teams haven't implemented particularly since that Pete Carroll video has been freely available on YouTube for years.

My brother-in-law coached the UT rugby team for 5 years (Strong/Herman era) and I used to beg him to offer his services to our then ineptly coached defenses. Tackling in general has gotten poorer over the past generation - in Texas HS football this is due largely to the 7x7 stuff - but both from a practical and health perspective every team would benefit from learning these techniques.

I live and die with LSU these days almost as much as I do Texas and my stress level and liver can't take another performance like last weekend.

LSU could benefit immensely from watching and employing this style of tackling. Seattle is definitely one of the better tackling teams in the NFL.
