Clark seems more interested in keeping his jersey clean.

go watch the first touchdown from South Carolina and tell me what coach in the world can fix the stupidity that Jacoby Stevens plays the game of football with.

It's a two-high safety look. South Carolina hands the ball off from shotgun. Instead of staying on his hash of the field, Stevens runs to the middle of the field to guard a crossing receiver. Meanwhile, the USC running back bounces outside and up the sideline for a 40 yard touchdown.

Orlovsky highlights Logan and Clark not setting the edge, but that should have been a 10-15 yard gain and instead ended up being a 40-yard TD run because Stevens takes himself out of the play for no apparent reason.

ETA: Not advocating for or against Bo. But I can't have an opinion on Bo because of awful play like that.

Go back and watch the tape it’s mostly Clark not stopping the run. Doesn’t have the ‘grit’ to play the position. (From what has been seen so far)

Stevens an elite cover guy last year?? WTF were you watching last year. STevens is average is coverage and his main forte is coming up and stopping the run. Dude is too slow to be a elite cover guy. Stingley is an elite cover guy. Watch out when you use the word "elite" jezzzzz

Flotte is awful. Just flat out gets beat over and over again. You keyboard warriors just don't get it. The only thing Pelini did wrong Saturday was keep Clark in the game. He is awful, needs the Giles treatment. Take back the #18. If you can't play sound defense and play your gap get off the field. South Carolina did absolutely nothing special running the ball. A couple speed sweeps and Stevens is shooting gaps thinking he runs a 4.4 missing tackles instead of playing his gap and making the tackle for a 2 yard gain.

Probably like many Ranters.

What are those "Nebraska Fans" saying about Pelini's replacement?
Are they happy?

Flott gets beat alot. Many times the receiver has at least several yards of separation from him if not more. He never seems to turn around and look for the ball.

Ricks and Stingly were targeted a combined 0-6 against S. Carolina. There were several pass breakups between the two plus Ricks had a pick 6.

True. The key to Stevens is Hampton and Harris. They have to be better in coverage to allow Stevens to spin and be available for RBs.

The pattern matching zone is supposed to alleviate some of that. Even your best cover S struggle with many of these slot WRs. You have guys like Jefferson and now Marshall who normally would be wide in the slot now. TE's like Gilbert and Pitts who S's can't quite match.

In short, you will often, very often, struggle with personnel matchups against todays offenses IF you are going to stop the run. We, thankfully, make a living nowadays doing the same on the offensive side of the ball.

One of the keys to today's pattern matching zone is that is "swaps" to man-man if a receiver goes vertical and leaves the zones. If you have good corners, which we do with 1 inexperienced (Ricks), and then that should alleviate some pressure on the S on the deep routes.

You are man-man only in your zone, hand off if receiver crosses into another zone, and if receiver goes out back of zone (vertical) you stay with him. Makes you susceptible to clear outs short but that's what S's are for, not double coverage deep. Obviously, it is somewhat dependent on pressure to limit the risk deep.

So Stevens having to cover WRs, deep, isn't supposed to happen this much. I'd say the S's are supposed to be covering flats and seams more than zones, but I'm guessing on that.

One of the biggest problems is we have pretty regular breakdowns on those vertical routes where no one sticks with it. TEs/RBs running loose is the other problem. Add to that the LBs defending the run, including the edge.

Here's the conundrum- those 3 are in conflict. If failing at 1 the other 2 should be better covered. If CBs aren't going with the vertical routes, why are RBs coming on crossing routes all the way across the field and getting to the sideline. If LBs are sticking with their man in their zone too long, why are S's not free to cover the opposite side of the field for the RB/TE slipping out. On and on.

But the idea is that S's aren't, this often, responsible for covering WRs that deep in the field. So Stevens lack of cover ability is supposed to be hidden somewhat by the scheme where last 2 years it was hidden by personnel (Delpit). But S's on many of these TEs and slot WRs is indeed a losing game whether it is Stevens or not.

You gotta throw in Harris too he is the worst Safety we've got. Might as well play Toles too.

Stevens didn’t know it was a running play until the guy scored.

Stevens and Clark are out of position in a 4-3
Stevens should be playing outside LB and rushing the QB on 3rd downs. Clark needs to be sat down. He lets his eyes wander and gets caught in traffic on every running play. He is not playing quick enough to get around blocks and not strong enough to get off them. All he does is chase the play.

Agree we need to give Toles a chance. Against Auburn would be an ideal time. Does Davonte Lee have the speed to play Safety?

If Stevens is the Defense's Captain, move him to LB where his speed can have more impact on end-arounds and giving direction to the youngsters based upon his game experience.

It's exasperating that between Pelini, Raymond and Busch that we can't get these guys playing at a semi-competent level. Throw in Harris as well. It's not like we don't have the talent.

If we don't maintain gap integrity, set the edge and defend space Gus is going to have our players chasing their tail with all of the misdirection and jet sweeps.

Todd Harris is the worst DB I've ever seen. How he even gets on the field is a mystery to me.

Stevens is playing out of position. He needs to be moved to linebacker.

He's listed at 6'2 230 on LSUSports.net. That's a LB by any team's standard.

Probably should have made him a LB and moved Marcel Brooks to safety. I know there was some rumbling that he didn't want to play LB but personal reasons may have been why he ultimately transferred.
