Got a text from the retired Auburn High head coach who is good friends with Ensminger.
Good call.
I wouldn't think that a guy could land coaching gigs at the likes of Auburn, Tex. A&M, Ga, Clemson, and now LSU without having some ability as a football coach.
Since he played for LSU, was good enough to be hired by a number of pretty good football schools, and has contacts in the Louisiana high coaching circles, I don't see any problem with him becoming the TE's coach at LSU.

I'm pinching myself we were able to lure him away from Smith's Station High.

If it puffs you up to come on a forum and make fun of the hire of an X LSU player to coach LSU TE's, knock yourself out.

Add to this; Georgia, Alabama, Texas, & Florida,
who am I leaving out. Steve seems to be well traveled. Hopefully his return will be a good one for LSU football. God knows we have enough dead meat on our coaching staff. Any improvements will be a blessing in 2010.

He played at LSU .. he MUST be a great coach .. just like Lynn Amedee in '94 was !!!

Most of the players he recruited at Auburn are from AL and FL...which is nice to recruit in 2012.

I don't know what kinda coach he will be for LSU and neither do you, but I don't think the fact he played for LSU and coached for the likes of Ga., A&M, Auburn, and Clemson makes him a bad coach either.
Carry on with your bitching.

How bout it? What's wrong with coaching high school? There are some fine high coaches around.
Instead of trying to knock the guy cause you have some hang up over him coaching some HS ball in his career, why don't you focus in on the fact that he has a lot college coaching experience as well and lets all of us see how it goes before we start pissing on the man the day he gets the job.

Yep .. that stanford QB was Guy Benjamin who outplayed Ensminger in the 1977 Sun Bowl
Keep in mind that Benjamin was a senior and Steve was a junior. Also keep in mind that Stanford was running a very radical offensive scheme for that era. They passed the ball a lot more. As I recall, Benjamin was also a bust in the NFL.
I say we give Steve the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

One of the very few posts in this thread that makes sense.

If true, lazy hire at best.

Does anyone have ANYTHING relevant to say in this thread. 11 pages and only about 3 post with any real information to absorb. What do his former player think of him? Former coaches? Anyone, that would be some good information if anyone knows or can dredge it up.

Looks to me there is plenty of relevance in this thread .. I am guessing you want more "rah rah ! yippie ! we hired a former tiger as an assistant coach!" in here ... I haven't seen an assistant coaching hire EVER draw more objective posts than this ... This was a bad, lazy hire by Les Miles and a program two years removed from a national title ... The list of people he interviewed was horrible ! Ensminger had already been tossed on the college coaching wood pile ... He was coaching high school football for reason .. Not too many high quality assistants out there that just coach a few years in HS for shits and giggles .. Think about it .. we are a MAJOR tip of the national tongue program and this is the best we can do ?? Hire a reject out of a 9th grade civics classroom ?
