I believe our points per game allowed is high because of busted coverages in the secondary. We had blown coverages and miscues EVERY game this year, except for maybe A&M. Other than that, we kept every opponent contained (for the most part).

Only idiots put all of the blame on Steele. It was his first year and the DBs had to learn a new system. A DB can always get beat. What we saw last night was great and with experience, the D should be better.

The offense had barely any turnovers the first 7 games.
Special teams coverage was poor but that meant teams were starting around the 30. Teams weren't starting in plus territory. Teams drove the field on LSU and the defense usually helped them with busts.
LSU gave up way too many points this season which is an undeniable fact.

Unless he is saying total combined yards, which is bullshite because LSU played less games. You have to go by game average.
And last year, we were 3rd in the country in average points given up per game. This year, we are 44th. That's unacceptable

The first year reason for busts is such a poor excuse. The defense was solid and in position all season long in 2009 - Chavis' first season.

And? They didn't exactly shut them down except maybe you could argue they did WKU. Last night for that QB to even play like he did was amazing considering LSU had somewhere around 20 QB pressures in the third quarter.
Dak Prescott SHREDDED the LSU defense in the second half. Last night was probably their best defensive effort on the season. That's about the only positive I take from Steele this year as DC because nothing improved from last year except defensive line and that's clearly O doing that. The defense was getting worse from game 1 all the way to the 3 game skid. The positive there is they improved against a bad TAMU team and a very good TT offense.
No team scored under 19 points on LSU. That's the only stat that matters -- scoring defense. If at any point in the season LSU's offense struggled you could bet your arse you couldn't rely on this defense to win the game for them.

LSU is 27th in total defense. People may think that seems good. To put that in perspective the 2008 defense everyone thinks is the worst of all time was 32nd. Not very far away.

Malveto defense also didn't give 20+ points up 9 straight games either. Not to mention in those 9 games SEVERAL QBs were like 3-4th string QBs.
They keep Steele Miles will be out the door next year unless we see some amazing progression at QB in which case the offense will need to carry the team like they did in Mett's last season. You're going to see some really bad LB play next year unless by some miracle Beckwith stays.

Special Teams certainly didn't help and I think SBD is a fricking moron, but I think if you add up our points allowed on blown coverage/busted plays/miscues, you'll be surprised at the percentage.

For reference: the 2013 defense, which was pretty bad, finished 15th in yards/game and 21st in ppg
2014, which also struggled, finished 3rd nationally
Football Outsiders Defensive FEI, which adjust for plays, drives, opponents, etc, has us at #39 going into the TT game

How can anybody seriously say that you can judge a DC after only ONE single season?
I don't think it's possible. Many are ready to run Steele out of town based on one season.

I agree. I can't judge Steele too harshly, especially since the consensus on this board is that our defense is depleted and Chavis left it in ruins (or something like that).
I didn't like the Steele hire, but the guy is here now and deserves his chance to do what he wants to do.
