Improvement on special teams, primarily kick and punt coverage, would be huge for the scoring number.

I disagree with this to an extent. Last night, Tech had drives of 90 and 95 yards after LSU punts. They had a TD after starting in LSU territory after the int. Only 1 TD came from a result of LSU's kickoffs to the 35. Depth was the biggest issue.

That makes more sense. OP stated it was nationally.

To be fair, there were some pretty unbelievable plays made by their QB.

The DL was much more aggressive. The linebackers were solid. The decline was with the defensive backfield. They got burned in key situations all year, even with increased pressure from the front 7.

The decline of the secondary is because Steele insisted on forcing zone schemes that clearly none of the young DBs were capable or comfortable with running. Later in the season we started to play more man and the defense got better because of it especially last 2 games.

What those stats don't show is how bad the QBs were LSU faced this year yet no team scored under 19 points on this defense. A lot of blown coverages and it was usually zone schemes but genius DC wouldn't adjust it to player strengths.

You guys are absolutely blind if you think Steele is a good DC.

It's not SEC stats either; we weren't that bad this year.

nationally:

total defense: #8
yards per play: #6
pts. per game: #42

as per Jimmy Ott this morning. Not too bad really.

those numbers aren't bad at all.

They are also not all correct.

Might wanna check your source before parroting it on here.

Those numbers are very wrong.

Total defense: 27 ( LINK)
yards per play: 32 ( LINK)
PPG: 42

And scoring defense is the ultimate stat, and we were 10 out of 15 in the league. Stop trying to annoint this guy. This is the worst LSU defense in the past 8 years.

Yes and no

November = "later in the season"

Lsu got stomped by ole miss and arky. And most of the scoring in those games occurred in the first half, so spare me the "our defense was tired"

Lsu looked good against a dumpster fire aTm and decent against a very overmatched texas tech. I dont think lsu improved so much so as their competition got worse after ole miss.

We played some really great QBs this season, including 2 of the top 4 and 4 of the top 10.

Who is blind?

LSU also played another really good offense in WKU where they played a lot more man in that game too. Spread teams LSU was mostly man and that's when our defense flourished. It's not a coincidence. Steele is clueless on how to adjust his scheme to player strengths but rather insist on trying to force it.

Can't argue with the product on the field especially when he's a bad history of it at DC. If LSU keeps him this board is going to implode on how bad the defense will be next year when we have freshman LBs across the board and guys like White/Neal leave early.

Only QB we played that was good up until the WKU game was Dak Prescott. That was an early game in the season which I guarantee you would've went different for MSU had they played LSU later. In that game he also shredded the LSU defense in the second half. All the other QBs we played up until WKU were anywhere from 3rd-5th string starting QBs. They were terrible. Even some other teams really didn't have good QBs past that. Bama's QB is just average and not asked to do much only be efficient which they are. TAMU's QBs suck, Arkansas QB is decent and Ole Miss QB can be great to bad depending on the game and TT's QB is excellent but their offensive line terrible.

LSU played 3 good QBs this season and the rest were anywhere from average to terrible.

Also played

Jeremy johnson
Syracuse backup
E Michigan backup
S Carolina backup
Florida backup

So lets not act like LSU faced some gauntlet of QBs all season

Nobody is acting like that dummy. Why can't I correct a wrong statement without some idiot like you having that kind of response? What goes through some of you people's mind, I'll never know.

You sound upset. You should be happy, sounds like Steele is staying.

you can bookmark this thread and bump it in a year if it turns out to be the right move.

But I wouldnt get my hopes up if i were you.

Not even the great Malveto could put a hall of shame stat up that Steele did this season. It would've been worse if TAMU was able to score 1 more point.

Your stupid response struck a nerve. I should work on not letting ignorant thought processes bother me as a new year's resolution.

We played 3 of the nation's top 10 QB's this year. FWIW CFBstats

Link added for proof that I didn't make up the stats.
