There are no pictures of the original Washington Artillery because photography wasn't invented yet.

Maybe so, but they followed the motto of WTS, and made war as it supposed to be fought. When you enemy is afraid, it helps the fighter.

I could go for this.

However I see a statue of the original Tigers as a winner.

One of my major causes over the years has been to have the ROTC building named after Sherman (if y'all notice, it sticks out that it's not named after anyone)....or to make it a little more palatable to the people who don't think the South lost the Civil War; Sherman-Chennault (another tiger connection there too...)

What I hope to do before i leave this five sided puzzle palace is get a M-4 tank for LSU, we can put it in the place of the Corporal missile in front of the ROTC building and call it the "Sherman Memorial Tank"....then when all the nay-sayers come up, simply ask the question: "what kind of tank is it?"

vl100butch - What do you know about those 2 cannons outside the Military Science (ROTC) building. The plaque states that they were donated to the school by Sherman after the war and that they fired on Ft. Sumpter. Do you have any other info on them?

Without getting into actual historical reasons for the Civil War, the PERCEPTION of the reasons for the War by families of most of the young men that play for the university is that the War was fought to protect an institution that enslaved their ancestors.

It doesn't matter what you think because we don't expect you gto go out on the field and score touchdowns, it matters what the families of the young men that we are trying to recruit to play here think.

We do NOT want to be Ole Miss.

Besides, the Washington Artillery Tigers have a longer history in Louisiana and aren't as controversial as a bunch of immigrant thugs shanghaied into fighting Americans.

Wouldn't be a bad toy to have at home somewhere away from it all. Hollidays that involve fireworks would go to another level.

this is so ignorant. The first Tiger units were mostly immigrants but not all. But by the time the ANV got really rolling ALL the La Units were referred to as Tigers, men from all over the state and just as American as their foes.

i hate to get into T. Harry Williams mode:

but the senior unit in Louisiana with the Tiger insignis is the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, which goes back to 1838...

Dan Hardesty cites them as being one of the namesakes of the LSU Tigers in his history of LSU football....

I go back to my point of an addition to the War Memorial on the Parade Grounds would be totally appropriate....with ALL of the battle honors earned by Louisiana Tiger units (which includes Mexican War, Spanish American War, and WW1 participation)...and a mention of the Flying Tigers as well...

As much as I love the origin of our nickname, I don't think the statue would be well-received.

The one thing you should never underestimate is the general public's inability to understand history and its ability to overreact to their incorrect perception of it.

LSU's presentation of the such a statue would be correct and well-intentioned. The public's perception would be incorrect and reactionary.

As Southerners we need to face facts, even those we don't like to face. One of them is that no matter how well-intentioned the gesture, public displays of sympathy for the Confederate cause are no longer received well in open society.

We need to grow up, get our eyes off of our past and make a better South for the future.

Don't be like Ole Miss.

Mmmmm...Seems like I remember a story about some immigrant thugs that came to this new world and killed a bunch of it's native people while building a place called America.

I have to agree with this. A statue of confederate soldiers would do nothing but hurt recruiting. Maybe we could put it somewhere away from the stadium.

Maybe the statue shouldn't be displayed on campus, but I see no reason why they couldn't put this statue in the Andonie Museum.

ABSOLUTELY....they really don't get the significance of their imagery and history and wonder why their recruiting sucks...Ross Barnett on the steps anyone? and they didn't (and still don't) have a Bear Bryant to break the stranglehold....although Chucky Mullins went a long way to bring them into the 20th Century (and yes I mean 20th not 21st)....

It is a shame that that seems to be the entire legacy for the CSA and thus the Tigers. You know just as I know that the war was sold to them in the vernacular of "Weapons of Mass Destruction" was sold to us. States rights and such.

Unfortunately there probably is no way to do this respectfully without becoming a focus and a lightning rod such as Ole Miss.

You are probably right, much as I hate to admit it.

Funny, in other situations people use this term and are called out for it being a code word. As a liberal, I guess you can get away with it.

So how do you feel about Col. David F. Boyd? As a member of LSU administration, he forfeited his own pension to help the University avoid bankruptcy in the post-war haze in an attempt to keep the school in existence so trash like you could be around to bad mouth him one day. Was he a thug?

Tell me, you advocate William T. Sherman, how do you feel about total war? Would you advocate our military burning everything civilians own overseas today when we are fighting in a region?

Isn't that the topic being discussed the first Tigers?

Didn't the OP state: "How cool would it be to have a statue of the original battalion that the Tigers derived thier name from" ?

Why don't you just quit showing off that you read Jones' Lee's Tigers, other people have read it too.

And no, not ALL Louisiana units were referred to as Tigers, certainly not the 7th Louisiana Cavalry. And again NO, the mostly Acadians that made up the 7th were NOT as "American as their foes".

Don't call me ignorant, you little shite arse, before you get your own feces consolidated.

Just look how volatile the topic is here. It would explode like this and worse.
