That's true but not maintaining consistant fan support like a Kansas or Carolina does not prevent LSU from succeeding. Granted, it certainly helps things but is not requirement for success. Louisiana fans, if anything, prove that they support a winner. Unfortunatly the burden falls on the team to succeed before people pay attention, but that's just the way it is.

I think Florida with their back to back NCs will support that...but Florida is still a football school and unless Florida is a top ranked team in basketball...i dont think they get much support from the fanbase...just like a Texas. That's jmho.

Now Florida isnt even in the AP top 25 and have an 18 pt loss to Oh St at home...are they still filling up their arena? I dont know...im curious.

the NCAA sanctions absolutely sucked the life out of the program.

This cannot be stated enough. LSU Basketball has never been the same since the Lester Earl fiasco. And the hiring of Brady, in spite of his successes, was a bad move from a P.R. standpoint. Brady could not make a connection with the fans. I'm not sure if Trent can as well. Time will tell.

but I dont think anyone can really argue that Louisiana isnt predominately a football state.

No arguement here, that will always be the case. Just stating that LSU basketball can become relevant again with consistency which has been lacking for nearly two decades.

IF the team makes the NCAA tourney 3-4 times every five years, this becomes much less important. You do bring up a good point though. TJ isn't a rah rah type guy like Pearl, so winning on a consistent basis is a MUST.

the comparison I always look at is Bruce Pearl.

Tenn is a lot like LSU. Football school, basketball is secondary.

Pearl took over a pretty bad team, and he hasnt needed ANY time to transition.

He hasnt missed the NCAA tournament in 5 years, and his team is well on their way again this year.

They have been continually ranked. They have been deep into the tournament. They challenge UK when Cal was there.

I cant stand all the excuses made for Johnson. Not that LSU wont become a decent program, but basketball is not a sport where you need 2-3 years to show results. It just isnt.

seriously? the guy who lied to the NCAA about all his recruiting violations and nearly lost his job because of it? it's easy to do well when you're cheating.....

you think our name carries the weight of Kentucky? And that team isn't in that great of state to win a national title anyway...

its pretty obvious for whatever reason that Tennessee is recruiting better than LSU. They are simply more talented. That said, since Pearl has been at Tennessee, I think LSU is either .500 or above vs. Tennessee.

pearl has 1 player in the NBA, who was undrafted.

I dont think he has had a player drafted from Tenn, in fact.

that doesn't mean they weren't recruiting better college basketball players though. I mean they aren't getting one and dones and so forth but they get highly rated kids every year while besides Stringer and O'Bryant most of our recruits in the Johnson era haven't really been those top tier guys.

I had a nice response typed out to the original poster and then I remembered my pledge to not respond to these types of Tiger20/Beatles posts. I'm glad I showed restraint.

dont know what that says about Trent.

bottom line is Pearl inherited a similarly weak program, and hit the ground running and hasnt missed the Tourney yet, while LSU is floating in purgatory.

their turn around is definitely impressive. I hope these guys like Stringer, Turner, and O'Bryant can get things turned around quickly. We need to schedule less of these cupcakes IMO though. We may take our licks but those same licks helped us tremendously on the final 4 run in 06. Obviously that team was better but I think it would show the coaches and players where the team really stood.

Trent's been at LSU for two full seasons and made the tourney once....how's that floating in purgatory?

Pearl actually reminds me alot of Dale Brown. he's a Rah Rah guy.. a motivator.. and a "player's" coach...but isnt the greatest at Xs and Os. But as long as he is at Tenn...he will have alot of ranked teams and tourney teams...Now Dale had a few final four teams...so Pearl has a little ways to go.

I disagree that LSU is floating right now. Two years ago gave the eventual national champion a run. Despite a few good players that team was undermanned and Trent did an amazing job. Last year was clearly a painful, transition year. This year the team is definitely better and a nice foundation is being laid. I don't understand the impatience with Trent. He seems to be a class guy and is doing the right thing.
