If you remember Bo’s defenses at LSU, he used small safety like LBs. Guys with speed to blitz and cover. Ali Highsmith was a monster for us in Bo’s defenses. (Also the original number 7 in our modern era of football success) Guys like Stevens and Brooks will ball out as OLBs in his scheme. So our base 4-3 will really be more like a 4-1-6. Perfect for the spread schemes they will face. Fast and aggressive.

You think Bo has been living in a cave and has not seen spread offense? He has been a HC in a tough conference that used more spread offense than SEC.

Many do. Bo hasn't been a DC since 2007 so they assume he hasn't followed football, in particular defending the modern offense, as a head coach.

You expect to get pressure with DTs playing DE?

You want a 220 lb freshman playing DE on first and second down?

Both of y'all are retarded.

We've already got the guys for a 4-3. Burch isn't a given but would be an awesome addition to sweeten the pot that much more.

Think Jadeveon Clowney.

That's what we are talking about here.

That's what was awesome about Pelini's defenses here. It doesn't have to be the DE. It often was, but not always.

Sometimes it might be the FS.

Pelini understands the first tenet of defense. If you can get pressure on the QB with 4 guys, your defense is gonna win A LOT of downs.

Pelini will find a way to do that with the current personnel.

I love this hire. As long as O and Pelini get along.

There was an interview process. No way I believe Pelini was hired based strictly off of his previous success at LSU. We operated the most difficult offense to defend this year and our defense practiced against all season so I'm sure there's a defensive playbook, notes, and whatever else either left over from Aranda or created by somebody else during his time. Whatever Pelini said in that interview was enough to convince Coach O that his defense can and will be successful defending the spread.

I'm confident the defensive staff of Pelini, Johnson, Busch and Raymond will be able to defend Spread Offenses. That's a lot experience there. (BTW, BILL Johnson is a light years better Defensive Line coach than DENNIS Johnson was; not even close)

I'll be interested to see how Shelvin will do in a 4-3 assuming we actually switch to that

Seriously what do people think the offenses in the FCS run? Do they think all teas are running the Wing-T or I formation power football?

Not ideally we don't. We are very light on true 4-3 DEs. Those LBs we've recruited aren't hand in the dirt types and the SDEs are very limited in experience and really more natural DTs. It is a genuine concern.

The pass rushers we have now. EDGE = 4-3 weakside DEs or stand up pass rush OLB. They are pretty interchangable with the main difference just being hand down vs. not generally speaking.

In a 4 down line we'll get more pressure from the front 4 as well than we did from our 3 in the 3-4 since they were playing 2-gap.

Back in the day under Pelini we had some non weakside DE/pass rush DLinemen get some sacks:

2005
- Melvin Oliver had 9 sacks as a 6'3 277 pound bigger DE
- Claude Wroten had 6 sacks as a 6'3, 290 pound DT
- Glenn Dorsey had 3 sacks as a backup 6'2, 284 pound DT
- Kyle Williams had 3.5 sacks as a 6'2, 295 pound NT

2006
- Glenn Dorsey had 3 sacks as a 6'2, 299 pound DT
- Tyson Jackson had 8.5 sacks as a 6'5, 292 pound bigger DE
- Ricky Jean-Francois had 3 sacks as a backup 6'3, 289 pound DT

2007
- Glenn Dorsey had 7 sacks as a 6'2, 303 pound DT
- Tyson Jackson had 3.5 sacks as a 6'5, 291 pound bigger DE

That's all from the non "pass rush" spot on the DLine only. Our LBs and DBs chipped in sacks too. In 2005, 2006 and 2007 we had 38 sacks, 39 sacks and 37 sacks respectively. For reference the last 3 seasons we had 37, 34 and 39 sacks in 2019, 2018 and 2017.

I played basketball with Jacoby Stevens last night and he is much looks a lot bigger on the field. I always thought he looked huge, but he was probably 6'1 210 or so. Marcel Brooks was also playing, feed that boy
