In looking at the overall special teams play it looks solid but not spectacular.

Is this area of the game something that Lane typically doesn’t put extensive focus on?

Not complaining here, like I said, it’s solid work. I just think that it’s an area we may need as an edge to win a game in the toughest part of the schedule.

We really need to poach Coach Chris from Tulane. It’s the one thing Lane’s staff is missing. An elite Special teams coordinator

I mentioned in a thread the other night. In multiple games, it doesn’t seem like we’re doing much blocking for a return when the other team is punting.

I thought the same.

It looks like the goal is to field the ball with no errors.

And that’s good and safe, nothing wrong with that.

There may come the need to be more risky later in the schedule.

We had two non contact ACLs in Wright & Charles Ross on punt return.

I think we will be quite conservative on ST. Just need Starzyk to hit the easy FGs

I kind of hate our punt return process. We never, ever go after the block. To the point they’re clearly coached to just stay away from the punter and don’t get a penalty.

But then on the flip side, we don’t really have our PR surrounded by teammates to block for big gains.

Feels like the approach is just don’t get a penalty and get the ball back for the offense.

It is conservative.

I don't know if that is Lane's general philosophy or maybe he's not confident he has the personnel to be aggressive.

Moscona did a whole segment last week on how good our special teams are.

I know a lot of you hate him, but I listen to his pod from time to time.

Maybe unpopular opinion because they are fun, but most of the time I don’t think returns are that important provided you have a good offense.

Situationally yeah but for the most part just need a good kicking & punting / coverage.

Which is great, how many times are you going to cleanly block a punt vs draw a flag to put the defense right back on the field

In fairness, that subsided pretty quickly when Polian was gone.
