really don't think we finished #3 in total defense

We did.

But, we finished at #17 in scoring defense. We had 279 points scored against us. All of them were not given up by the defense. I will go through the box scores on the LSU website and look at scoring summaries to see just how many TD's our defense gave up. Some of those points are special teams and points scored by offensive lost turnovers that were returned for touchdowns.

This year, though, we are ranked #68 in scoring defense. That's not good.

No, that's not good. And the point I guess I was trying to make is that there was a slide--for whatever reason--from '06 to the end of '07. Nothing like from then to now, though. I'm not smart enough on the xs and os to pretend to know what the problem is, I just know there is a problem and I trust that Big Les will fix it.

The players look confused

I would say they are confused, not just "look confused", based on the number of times they look toward the sideline giving the international hand signal for "WTF?":

We returned a pretty good defense that was #3 in the country last year.

No we didn't and this is where I stopped reading your post......do some research on the team from last year and compare the same players that are on the defensive team now.......when you do that, come back and rewrite this phrase.....

We lost FIVEguys off defense to the pros, that's nearly half the starters. They were PRO QUALITY. They don't just appear every day. I'm not happy with 2 losses, especially the scores, but damn, give me a freakin' break. It ain't the end of the world.

I don't think anyone would expect a player to say publicly anything along the lines of “it’s these silly schemes we’re using that’s killing us” or “our talent’s great so it must be the coaching”.

Even if they executed Pelini’s scheme to perfection I’m not convinced it would ever shut down a good offense. If someone wishes to disagree, name one time we really stifled a good offense over the last 3.5 years? We shut down some average and bad offenses. But the better ones seemed like they always put up 20+ points.

Once they step on the field it’s up to the players to execute what they were coached.

It is my sincere hope that we will see an improved ballclub play an inspired game agaist Tulane, and move on to the rest of the season. That may not happen. This year sort of reminds me of the year we went to the Cotten Bowl with Randle as QB - that team never really got it together. I don't know if it was immaturity, players, coaching, but the scenario is pretty similar. KC. ps - we were a lot better the next year!

And, a fall off from last year was to be expected. NOT a drop off a cliff. Guess what. There's some pretty OK defenses in college with ZERO or maybe 1-2 pro caliber guys. Not as good as LSU last year but a shite pile better than this year's.

What I see is a supposedly deep and talented DL being pushed around and unable to create any pressure, leaving our inexperienced DB's hung out to dry. Our CBs are better than expected, safeties not as good as expected. Not flying to the ball, not wrapping up, LBs often MIA, DE overpursuit, etc, etc. Intensity does seem to be lacking-this is where I think we might miss BP most of all-that dude stayed wound up tight. And some of that talent that went on to the NFL were the emotional heart of the team-Dorsey, Steltz, Highsmith. DB does not have the personality to take the defense up on his shoulders emotionally. TJ seems to have that personality, but he still seems to be in and out of plays mentally. I don't like decisions being made by committee, and that applies to our defensive bosses.

Yes, 2 quick things. I forgot. Miles lines up at DT, and the co- DC's play in our secondary. What do you mean its not the players? Grow a pair and do what you are coached for one and two, we are one shut out win against bama that everyone will be back bragging and talking sh*t about how good our defense is. Stop being a bunch of freaking spoiled fans and back the Tigers.

I think that the Co-DC's are teaching the Kids Defenseive Techniques to the best of their abilities...the coaches are doing thier job and and the players are doing what they are told and showed...I think that it is a lack of experience with the techniques that they are teaching is whats killing us...It will be hard for miles to let them go because it was almost like he threw them under the BUS offering them the job with their lack of DC experience.. i belive deep down inside he knows this and he put them in the position that they are in and will try to be a nice guy and hope that things will turn around... I do not look for a change at all @ this position even though it is needed....

Don't you think that these two guys (Mallory and Peveto) pretty much accepted the responsibility knowing themselves that they didn't have the experience and that things might go sour because of this?

It's not like they are two innocent guys. They could have declined the offer. If somebody accepted me the position at my company of Director of the department I'm in, I would gladly take the responsibility and pay raise. But deep down inside, I would know that either I will get lucky and pick right up, or bomb. And if I bombed, it wouldn't be a big mystery that I would be replaced.

Let's beat this subject to death 24/7 for the next 6 weeks until everyone just gives up on the whole program, that's my suggestion.
