Someone with better football knowledge than me. Why did we give receivers such a cushion?

It seemed like, especially in the 1st half, we were just giving up underneath routes for free. I sort of understand on 1st down, but it would be like 3rd & 6, our DBs would be 10yds off the line of scrimmage and they’d just throw right in the middle of the field for a first down, over and over. It was so obvious that even me in my drunken stupor noticed it live, and I don’t claim to be some football expert.
Is there a logical explanation to this? It seemed like a scheme issue to me, but maybe the LBs were supposed to be covering that part of the field and were out of position? I dk, someone enlighten me.

Coaches don't trust our DBs in man, all there is too it. If you are going to blitz, run man to take away the quick easy routes. Can't send 5 or 6 and play 10 yards off, it's an easy 5-7 yards every play.

bc the game plan was to make Tc dink and dime down the field and then force field goals

Lane wanting to keep everything in front of the defense. Problem was our LBs would run up to the LOS to get a closer look at Chambliss instead of dropping back and getting in those short passing lanes.

But this is so obvious to you, and to me, so surely it’s obvious to our coaches as well, who are better at this than we are. That’s what I’m trying to figure out, it’s not like on 3rd & 6 we lined up our DBs 10yds deep and thought “hope they don’t notice!”

Because Blake Baker is scared to death of a quarterback who can run.

You’re saying our LBs are supposed to be in those spots but they’re worried about Chambliss running so they are out of position? That at least explains the issue if it’s the case. To be fair we did do a better job in the 2nd half

LBs cheating up to clogg potential running lanes left underneath routes open with DBs playing behind. DL didn't rush to keep him in the pocket. On the last TD, we dropped 8 and had 7 guys in good position. Our safety over the top came up 3-5 steps when Chambliss stepped up in the pocket (even though we had multiple LBs in position to contain him) and that allowed the TD pass right past the safety.

We coached and played scared all night.

I just had this thought, do you think practicing against Leavitt, who is run first so often, impacts the at? In practice the QB takes off and runs in that situation so we are expecting the same? Or maybe our coaches over emphasized Chambliss running ability in scout all week?

My guess is we'll overreact and call a much more aggressive pass rush (what we should be done to Chambliss) and Reed will run a lot due to the open lanes.

Better than the average ranter? No way.

It's more like "Let's not give up a TD and keep things in front of us", then hope for a bad pass or something.

Its such a delusion in todays game. If they dont trust them, wtf do they pkay them. Especially when they are the ones that are supposed to teach them. Giving up 10 to 20 yds per play, and doing it to maybe stop longer passes, is a delusional state of mind.

I’m with you on this. They either can or they can’t. If they can’t cover receivers 1 on 1 we aren’t winning much this year anyway, trying to hide them just makes it worse

It was the gameplan to limit big plays but it got Chambliss into a rhythm and prevented us from being able to get a pass rush. Needed to have tighter alignment in coverage, creative in generating interior pressure, and mixing looks. Which we did a decent amount in the 3rd quarter. Need to do that against him if we do play him again. Live with the plays he makes because there will be times where LSU will make plays. The defense we implemented in the first half made it very difficult for our defense to make plays which made it very easy for Ole Miss.
Watch Florida implement a lot of the things Miami did and what we did in the 3rd quarter. Its their only shot.

Answer: we don’t have anyone close to a Greedy Williams, Patrick P, or a D Stingley. CB is the toughest position to play outside of QB. Great CB’s are akin to .300 hitters in baseball — you still miss/whiff/insert word 60-70 percent of the time. In man coverage, this also holds true. But when you don’t have the ability to even have .300 hitters, you can’t play man. Hardly ever. So, you lineup to where you can’t be burned. All the while, you are hoping the front 6-7 can’t add enough pressure and you can get a poorly thrown ball and/or tipped ball.
See Auburn 2019 D Stingley end zone pick right before halftime . We don’t have a corner who can play man with a WR from scrimmage to 50 yards downfield like DS could. Therefore we cannot mix and disguise our coverages. Zone, zone, zone. Hope big Prince gets a big sack while you play 10-15 off the LOS.

It has nothing to do with our corners not being able to play man. Baker was determine not to let Chambliss beat us with his legs and the best way to do that is playing zone. In man payers turn their back to the qb running with wr’s. In zone all eyes are forward and towards the line of scrimmage.
Playing zone isn’t horrible if you can execute it, but I can’t remember the last time our Defense was a good zone team.
