It's 400 words of probably poorly written baseball content. Feel free to tear it apart.

In a game where everything seemed to go right for the home team, there are a few smaller occurrences that may portend good news going forward for the Tigers. Given the early season struggles by the starting rotation, it’s important to seize on even the smallest successes as a sign of progress.

Ma’Khail Hilliard made his first start of the year and faced 20 batters. He threw 72 pitches over 5.1 innings, averaging 3.6 pitches per batter faced and 13.5 pitches per inning. Both highly efficient numbers built on only walking 2 batters and only striking out 3. Given that we’ve seen him showcase strikeout stuff before (he came into the game striking just under a batter an inning), it was nice to see him still getting outs without his best stuff. Making it through the order two complete times plus some is also encouraging. It strengthens his case to keep himself in the weekend rotation.

John Kodros made his debut yesterday. He finished with one inning pitched and a strikeout on a somewhat generously called third strike. A strong initial outing may indicate an increased role going forward. Having another lefty with a funky motion that provides stark contrast all the other lefties on the roster in terms of stuff is a bonus.

LSU relievers inherited 3 baserunners yesterday. None of them scored. The most impressive strand job came from Cam Sanders. He flashed his premium stuff in striking out the first batter he faced and then fielded his position well on a comebacker groundball to get the last out of the inning. It kept Hilliard’s scoreless innings streak intact, but it was a role that Sanders had not been asked to fill to this point in the season. Given his previous penchant for not finding the strike zone very early in his appearances, his efficient handling of the two batters he faced is especially promising.

Clay Moffitt and Trent Vietmeier also stranded each of their inherited baserunners. Vietmeier’s appearance seemed specifically designed to test that ability. He came in following Kodros with only one out left to get in the game. Kodros left a runner in scoring position before being pulled in favor of Vietmeier. Vietmeier induced a groundout to end the game. While a short outing, it was an opportunity to learn and grow. Vietmeier’s success in that outing may payoff during SEC play when a similar performance is required.

I agree with you. Nice right up. Also, I do agree with PM when he said that Cam Sander's stuff and the his delivery reminds him of Nola. When he is on, he does remind me of Nola. Excited to see what Storz can bring. Can he match Labas? If so, the depth will be sick.

Good post.

Pretty measured by this board's early season freakout standards. But its equally premature as "We're fricked, we suck" after a random midweek loss

Hilliard has been nothing short of a revelation so far this season. In a pitching staff plagued by inconsistency despite talent, he has been consistently effective and often dominant.

It's highly unlikely he can replicate his current success against the SEC gauntlet of competition (I mean, he'll give up a run eventually), and some of those series will be tough on the young guys on staff. But, at the very least, CPM is finding some options to go to when our core veterans aren't firing on all cylinders.

That's kinda what I was going for. There were some things I didn't like. But I was only focusing on the good stuff.

The pitching depth is starting to come together.
When is the last time LSU opened the season against teams like Notre Dame and Texas to start it off with so many roles on the pitching staff to fill.

Pitching depth looks really good even with injury to Walker. That bodes well for later if you should fall into the loser's bracket of a tournament.

The hitting just has to get more consistent and their is depth that we've seen with injuries to Watson and Smith. I do think this team will need Smith for the stretch run though. Offense usually picks up as the weather gets warmer as well.

With SEC play starting, they are looking up at Fla and UK, everyone else is beatable in the SEC with a good weekend of play. I really wish they had Fla or UK on the schedule this year - would have been nice series wins with the way both those teams have started.

Nice post and good analysis. LSU's pitching staff has had multiple guys step up and log some quality innings early on. I'm curious to see how this staff shapes up moving forward and what role each pitcher will be asked to fill. Hilliard, Sanders, Labas, and maybe Storz (depending on injury status) are all viable starter options to go along with Hess and Gilbert.

Any one of those guys could also be a legitimate closer or setup man late in games. I think this staff is built for the post season and I hope they continue to get better. CPM has a lot of options and I am interested to see how he shapes the rotation and bullpen entering conference play.

Has Maineri commented on Storz’s status? I’m excited how great the staff looked, but I’m stoked to see Storz

Hopefully he can get a few innings during a midweek game before throwing him into SEC play.

Hilliard reminds me of what we had in Eric Walker last year. If he keeps fastball command look out!!

Actually Labas reminds me of Walker with the high 80’s fastball but pounding the strike zone. The command Labas has is scary

Only black pitcher I ever remember at LSU was Shane Youman, but he didn’t
start. He sucked pretty bad when he was sent in to pitch relief. Hung around the minors for quite a while though.
