The Omaha StormChasers (Royals) play here:

The City of Omaha built a $124M stadium for two weeks of play in the summer? Seems like an incredible waste of taxpayer dollars.

Some Independent league team plays there. I still don't understand why the Storm Chasers don't.

They built the stadiums at basically the same time. Creighton plays there and they use it for concerts/events/fairs, etc and the CWS.

Sounds like something the city of BR would do

Surely they use it for their state championships in baseball. Hell, they should use it for state championships in football as well.

The thing about a stadium like this, they get so much money from these two weeks of baseball they can afford to not have many events during the year. I'm pretty sure that some buisnesses around TD Ameritrade get the majority if not all of their yearly income during these two weeks. Apparently there are stores that are only open during game hours because they get crazy buisness then and no buiseness at all other times.

Creighton plays in a crappy small ballpark 10 min from TD Ameritrade.

but a team like Creighton wouldn't be able to even fill up one full section no reason to use that big stadium more than once or twice a year. They would probably loose money every game if they used TD Ameritrade.

i'm shocked that the Omaha Royals or whatever they are called now don't play there. I guess they don't draw very well and didn't want to be on the hook for what they may be asked to pay to use the facility. So they go and build their own smaller stadium? Strange. Municipal projects at their best.

The city must get a very nice chunk of money from NCAA/ESPN for hosting the CWS now.

I heard millions of people will be in the Omaha area over the next week and a half and the majority will be in a few square mile area. Business is probably goes sky high during the CWS in omaha. It's a city that isn't huge but hosts one of the most popular sporting events of the year and it hosts it back to back to back to back etc.

I heard about the millions of people thing from someone who has been coming here for 20 years or so.

They apparently feel differently, because they made the move last year.

At first glance 124MM seems like a lot of tax money which could be used on schools whatever. \

However need to understand business, revenue and financial modeling to understand why building a stadium is important to keeping the college world series in Omaha and them not losing it to another city.

Table 1: Summary of monetary impacts of CWS on Omaha and state economies

From 2008-2018 an actual/forecasted impact to the city is half a billion dollars or $514MM.

Subtract the 124MM stadium from the $514MM and tell me if its worth building the stadium or letting another city grab up the event.

Total or overall $40,977,260 $514,792,821 $385,597,941
Wages & salaries $12,604,924 $159,440,876 $119,335,976
Self-employment income $980,505 $12,265,628 $9,191,698
Number of year round jobs 537 537 537
Omaha tax collections $1,764,551 $25,661,690 $18,574,426
Local non-city tax collections $984,969 $14,324,308 $10,368,210
State tax collections $1,819,897 $26,466,574 $26,466,574
Total tax collections $4,569,417 $66,452,573 $55,409,211

You don't think that was just a BIT of an exaggeration? Millions? I don't even think the Super Bowl gets millions into the host city for the week. That's a lot of F'ing people!

For reference, if every seat in the stadium was filled by a different person for every game of the CWS (which of course would never happen) that would only get you about 525k people (15 games X 35,000 seating capacity = 525k).

Thousands, Yes. MILLIONS, not even close

Millions of dollars brought in to Omaha, yes. Millions of people, not so much.
