So what exactly did Hatcher do wrong last night?

Besides getting beat man-on-man on a go route as a MLB trying to cover a receiver?

I missed the game last night, and noticed a whole lot of threads calling out Hatcher, and as someone who has not been too positive about #37 in the past I was ready to throw him under the bus, but it looks to me like he actually played a good game.

It was a nice game at the middle linebacker position if you ask me, and he didn't even start. Whatever soft spots were found in the LSU defense last night, they can't legitimately be attributed to him ... unless I am missing something.

Yeah he got destroyed on this board last night for that play but it was a perfect pass and I don't think it is right to expect anything else out of any LB on that play.

That technique he has to play as a mlb is really tough. He can't really leverage the routes because he is in the middle of the field and he can't get his hands on his guy either. Not a great performance, but I think he got a little to much hate.

Either (A) he was supposed to have help over the top and just didn't get it, or (B) Chavis was gambling with some kind of disguised blitz where the LB had man-to-man on a speedy receiver.

Either way, Hatcher didn't look terrible on the play. He wasn't AWOL or anything. He just got beat by one great throw.

Only thing that I saw was that Kendrick Adams outran ALL of the LBs when chasing down the WVU running back. DAMN.

WHat I also liked about Kendrick Adams, was that instead of letting up on a penalty, he knocked the shite out of Geno Smith. Might as well knock him out....still 15 yards.

But even if it wasn't a great performance, that was just one play. It had almost nothing to do with the weakness of LSU's team defense last night.

I think 90% of it is people parroting what they hear from other people.

He actually played well last night. Most people see him in the area of a big play and automatically assume that he was the cause of it, but he was actually the one that helped stop both of the big plays last night. On the 50 yard sweep he was on the opposite side of the play maintaining the left side from a fake, and he ran all the way back to slow down the rusher enough so Ken Adams could get him, that was after 4 other players over-pursued the runner. He also pushed their receiver out of bounds on the huge 60-70 yard pass, he wasn't even the guy covering him, one of the cornerbacks had coverage on him, yet Hatcher gets blamed for giving up the big play.

People still dog him for the Arky game last year. I have no complaints about his play.

Or maybe they think he's still playing safety and get pissed that he's always letting receivers get behind him deep...

That's probably right. They have no idea that he mainly has coverage on the running backs or short throws

I'm trying to get better at picking on individual players since they are playing their hearts out for the school. Buuuutttttt, I can't help but notice when watching the replays of this game and the miss St. game that when big holes where found in our defense #37 was usually running behind the play. I have faith in our coaches to correct these issues however.

I feel sorry for hatcher. He is getting the McCray treatment, when he really does not deserve it. Just the way it is around here.

Well, I have a hard time figuring out his role, and this opponent was not a very good gauge to use. It's possible that he was assigned the back in the backfield all night, who was used in protection, yet we never pressured from Hatcher's spot.

I've seen enough and stated as such prior to this game (I'm sure it's in my post history) to lead me to believe that team's will try to isolate him when they can. It's arguable that our kicker and holder had as much contact as Hatcher did last night.

The staff obviously has similar concerns. With a 13 pt. lead (after a KO return TD) and a full quarter left to play, Muncie was brought in. I think Bryant played some after that. Muncie had a pass breakup, and Bryant had a couple tackles. They may have done more in less time played?

The type of offense we played last night does not compare favorably to the ones we need to beat for championships. After the 13-0 lead, we let them play 7 on 7 with us. So, although, I didn't like what I saw from our Hatcher position in the Miss. St. game, this game is probably not as good of a barometer to use.

Yeah, especially with that guy running the route, but Florida will do their best to get the same matchup, so hope we get something figured out.

Hatcher has been nothing but unspectacular or even solid the entire year. He is never in on any plays around the ball unless someone is breaking a big play. He reminds me of Francois from last year, not horrible but just not that good either. LB is the weakness on our defense right now, even with Baker.

Mid-game rage, is all. I reacted in a similar fashion, I admit. Overall, I think he did well.

It just brought back flash memories from the Arkansas disaster last year....

Got abused on the underneath stuff with the Y-Stick routes routinely. He's garbage running short zone concepts (See UWV replay). He's a penalty waiting to happen trying to time a an interior gap (see MSU), and his half arse attempt on the long play he got beat on gave them another 10 yards.

He is an Achilles Heel when he's out there. He can't cover and keep up in man. He's got zero feel for defending the zone underneath.

He's a horrible liability.

exactly what I thought too. I agree with the other poster who said it is just fans parroting each other when they really have no clue what they are talking about

Good post. My thoughts exactly. Someone is going to start isolating our LBs and exploiting this weakness on our team. Likely TEs down the seam or underneath. Or looking for that favorable set where LB is covering WR and isolating him.
