It somewhat bothers me that Holman’s last pitch was around 2:45 on Saturday. If he pitches on Friday at 7PM, he would begin warming around 5:45, which is over 6 days (147 hours), but only 5 days of rest for baseball.

He got 5 days “off” (Sunday - Thursday), but 6 days of “rest”. Ok, rant over.

He also only threw 77 pitches last weekend

You can put formulas and equations in all you want. You can even "prove" that he does in fact have 144 hours (6 days) of rest between his last pitch and the first pitch he would throw in the next game. But in baseball terms, if he pitched on a Saturday and then the following Friday, he had 5 days rest.

I think Hurd really benefited from having Skenes as a mentor. Seemed like Hurd really looked up to him and fed off Skenes.

He doesn’t really have his circle and seems to be getting too emotional on the mound

Was Hurd the pitcher that started using Skenes’ glove last season?

Jay won't make the decision based on the opponent. He'll make the decision based on rest days and the plan moving forward. I think we see Hurd again on Friday but I wouldn't be surprised by anything.

Pretty sure Hurd pitched a lights out game against UT last year. I bet Jay goes with Hurd.

Little did too from what I recall. Would really like to see him get it together.

Hurd does have the potential for dominate play after watching last year he is just a slow starter. It’s coaches call though.

He doesn’t have amazing stuff

This probably isn’t a criticism, but a few stats from last year:
WHIP- 1.05
Season BAA- .186
SEC BAA- .191
87K in 81 innings of work.
31 walks
ERA- 3.67

MLB.com ranks him the #35 prospect available and be #17 pitcher.

Other notes on his scouting report:
quote:

He was the best pitcher on the U.S. collegiate national team last summer, striking out 15 in eight scoreless innings.

quote:

Holman's fastball usually ranges from 92-96 mph and plays better than its velocity because he commands it well and rides it at the top of the zone with quality induced vertical break. His best pitch is a low-80s slider that he also locates well and features two-plane depth. He also has an upper-70s breaking ball with similar shape and curveball velocity but doesn't have the same feel for it or a sparsely-used mid-80s changeup with some fade and sink. Holman has a high floor as at least a No. 4 starter because he throws consistent strikes with three solid or better offerings. He already shows aptitude for sequencing his pitches and mixing locations.

In defense of his “stuff,” he’s striking out over a guy an inning and walking someone less than every other inning while they hit sub-Mendoza. He’s almost certainly never going to win a Cy Young or go #1, but he seems to have “figured it out” better than anyone else on the staff, and as a sophomore looked good. I’m stoked to see what he is doing to do the rest of this year.
