Skenes is at 179 Ks. He gets at least one more game. And if we make it to CWS and do reasonably well, won't he get two more outings in Omaha? If so, that's three games. He averages, conservatively, 10 Ks a game, which would mean 30 more and a total of 209. Hope he gets the chance.

I'm ok with Big Ben keeping that title. He's a baw through and through

the bad outing in the SEC tourney made Omaha necessary I think

I hope he gets the chance as that means we are in the finals...but hope he doesn't break the record. Ben needs to remain the greatest...

He likely would have needed at least one game in Omaha regardless. The "bad" outing (IIRC, 4 SOs) likely made 2 starts in Omaha necessary.

Of course, I wouldn't mind seeking him strike out 13-14 batters on Saturday and repeat that in Game 1 of the CWS.

He really doesn't have the quality aspect of the title though. The only reason he has more strike outs because he pitched like twice as many innings. Ben averaged like 11 strikeouts per 9 innings. Skeenes is at 17 per 9 innings. So the record is really only a function of the number of innings pitched moreso than the quality of the outing.

Love Ben in the booth. He's the best. Not being a baseball player, I learn a ton about pitching and batting listening to him.

Hope he shatters it because that means we are likely carrying away championship number 7

Why? They both play for LSU.

If he breaks the record it would cement one of the most dominant seasons in college baseball history. Ben had a great season. But he also pitch 150+ innings to set the record. If Skenes broke the record he would have done so in 30 (maybe 40) innings LESS than McDonald. That's unreal!

SO/IP for Skenes is a good bit higher though, right? Ben was a workhorse for Skip in a way that would get majorly frowned on in current times.

Hate to break it to you, but in terms of one single season Ben isn't remaining the greatest.

It’s like 6ks higher in strike outs per 9. Ben has an insane amount of innings compared to Skenes

There is a solid argument that what Skenes is doing this year in college baseball is better than Big Ben in 1989.

The strikeout is more prevalent in today’s game but the SEC hitters now are better and more prepared than they were in 1989. Every pitch Skenes has thrown for 3 years is on film. We can barely find any pitches Ben threw while at LSU.

I think we would have to make the final series for him to get 2?

This is why he needs to keep the record. Big Ben threw his arm off for LSU to the detriment of his pro career.

Big Ben 202 strikeouts in 152.1 innings...

Skenes as of right now 99.1 innings with 179 strikeouts...

"Twice as many" is overexaggerating. But assuming Skenes would go 7 innings in 3 more starts his total IP would be 126. Ben had 152 IP. So we are talking about roughly 25-30 more IP by Ben (depending on Skenes final total)

Ben averaged like 11 strikeouts per 9 innings.

He averaged around 12 per 9 innings. Skenes is now around 16.2 per 9 innings. The D1 record is 16.8 per 9 innings. The start where he threw 3.2 innings vs. Arkansas and only SO 3 hurt the average. The good news though is if he can get a couple of double-digit SO performances in two more games he can likely jump back in the lead in that category.

So the record is really only a function of the number of innings pitched moreso than the quality of the outing.

It's not ONLY a function of the number of innings pitched. But is is fair to say that Ben would have never sniffed 200 SOs if he did not throw 152 innings.

Arguably the most impressive "modern" (post 2000) season is Jered Weaver in 2004 where he SO 214 in 144 IP. Even then, 144 is a lot of IP considering even if Skenes gets 3 more starts he is unlikely to reach 130 IP this season
