Despite his struggles, he is, in fact, a catcher. That's what he's always been, and it's what he was recruited to do. I'm just having a difficult time seeing what they saw in him, defensively, never mind the hitting. You need to be an elite defender to start for a team like LSU, if you are hitting under .200. He's been an overall below average defender, IMO, and I'm trying to be nice.

Kid just stinks. Don't get angry, irrational, and butt hurt about it.

I don’t have a strong opinion either way...but to start a pro-Mathis thread and then one of your only support statements is “he’s all we got”....that’s not much support.

Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t both Willis and garza were projected ahead of him before they both got injured. Not saying there needs to be a switch now but at some point in the season

My opinion... I honestly believe that Garza was recruited to be the starting catcher this year, and Mathis was recruited as the back-up catcher; but an injury to Garza threw out those plans... just my opinion

So if you have judged him as a poor defending catcher, whats his pop time? And do you notice a large portion of his throws to 2nd being wild?
Stolen bases are like you said, mostly on the pitcher. And if youve been paying attention, its improved since sec play started

But you still would expect more than 3 or 4 guys thrown out all year long.
You're right. And we have.

We've thrown out 8 attempted base stealers so far this season, not "3 or 4."

You can afford a weak bat if a kid has great defensive skills behind the plate. But Mizzou's catcher launched a three-run bomb that got them back in the game last night. If Mizzou can find a catcher than can hit, Paul should too.

More concerning is the 2B that is even more lost at the plate than Mathis. Put the two together and you have an instant rally-killer.

Wow, you sure got me. Without looking it up like you did, I missed by a whole four. And, after looking it up just now, Mathis is responsible for 7.

Does that really change the point? Is 7-59 a remotely acceptable number to you? It sure isn't to me.

Mathis and the Missouri catcher you're referring to have the same number of home runs this season, 3.

Out of all the people on this site, you have to be the most petty. You had one disagreement with me, and so now you want to have a "gotcha" moment every time you see one of my posts. The trouble is, you haven't succeeded yet.

Out of 35 games, and 59 attempts against Mathis, going strictly off memory, I missed by 3 on Mathis and four overall for the team, and you act like I missed by 50.

Guess what? I would expect better than 7-59. I could accept, with the slow pitchers excuse, for the catcher to be maybe 15 or 16 for 59, at this point. But his numbers, as well as the eye test say that he just doesn't throw well. Period.

Lol Pap was way better at that point in his career than Mathis.

I’m not trying to shite on him, he’s probably a great guy, but he’s just not a very good player. I mean what is he batting now like .170, and he’s a below average defender. Mathis, Hughes, and Broussard have been horrendous at the plate. Good to see Broussard have a good game last night though.

Pulmonary has us in first place in the SEC.
The kid is the best that we have. He has earned his spot in the lineup.
Too bad there isn't some minimum criteria to point fingers and bitch.
I suppose claiming to be a fan qualifies anyone to moan and groan.
Continue on.

No one is going to see a decent, hittable pitch with Hughes and Mathis nearby in the batting order
