King nailed it. Executives have missed the boat on Flynn, and it's not a rah rah LSU thing. King makes the point objectively.

I agree that Matt Flynn can be successful if put in the right system.

The Raiders were not the right system. Their offensive line was terrible. He spent too much of his time running for his life, and he is not quick enough to dodge defenders for very long.

In Oakland, it sounded as if the head coach was pouting like a little bitch as if it was personal. Flynn was moved to second string when he was constantly getting crushed behind that shitty o-line. Pryor could run his way out of trouble. Then, as if it wasn't enough to move him to second, the coach made it a point to move him to 3 on the depth chart as if to make a point. Then Flynn was cut. I found it hilarious because Flynn is at least a 2nd string and in typical oakland style, they throw money at a problem, wait 5 seconds and give up. Buffalo...not sure what happened there. Manuel is the guy invested in, but don't know why they didn't give Flynn a chance at backup.

what struck me about Flynn in Oakland was how long he held onto the football on seemingly every pass play. I dont know if that is by design or not but in GB he got rid of the football

He still holds on to the ball too long, for sure.
He would rather take a sack then take the chance of a pick it seems.

Flynn should just stay in green bay and be rodgers backup for as long as they need him to. He will make a good salary and basically have job security playing behind rodgers. I believe hes a capable Qb but hes not a every week starter , hes good for exactly what he did for green bay this year

Good for Matt to "get paid".

While I tend to agree with the article, I'm not real bothered by the "treatment of Flynn".

Guy has made a ton of money in the NFL, and that makes me happy happy happy.

I'm sure HE'D like a chance to play/start, so to that end, I'd like to see it happen, but at the end of the day, I'm just glad he's "gotten paid".

Can't really disagree with King here

It said more to ME about the Raiders than it did Flynn anyway. Some teams are disasters and can't or don't see how to even compete. Im sure Matt is just fine with whatever has happened or will happen

Executives tend to have a hard time taking into account the intangibles in terms of game-play capabilities and practice capabilities. I have seen Matt make a few bone-headed plays this year, but he was definately a good QB. I believe it's the execs not being able to comprehend the differences. Based on what I saw this year, I feel like Flynn is better than these starting QBs:
- Chad Henne
- Matt Schaub
- Mike Glennon
- Mark Sanchez
- Gino Smith

he must really suck in practice......

If Oakland valued their o line more, they would get better production out of the qb position. I swear, there are posters on here that would be better gm's than what they have now.

Put Flynn in Dallas or NY(jets) and he would do good things.

The Dallas OL to start the year was bad as well.

Put him in Houston and they don't go 2-14.

Bottom line, a lot of guys in the front offices of pro teams aren't very smart, and they make dumb decisions.

by Peter King:

My current problem with quarterback-prospecting …

… revolves around Matt Flynn. I look at Oakland, where Flynn was shipped in the offseason, and I see the Raiders floundering at the position after cutting bait with him nearly three months ago. I see the Bills, who did the same after a short trial with Flynn when E.J. Manuel was down. And I say: You’re telling me Matt Flynn couldn’t have helped either team, either playing or by providing depth? I say this after watching the Packers for the past month, because Matt Flynn saved their season. Matt Flynn made the return of Aaron Rodgers Sunday in Chicago relevant. Without Flynn, Scott Tolzien would have given it the ol’ Badger try … and failed.

There isn’t a team right now in the NFL that wants to hand Matt Flynn the reins to run the team for the next five years. Understood. But the cavalier treatment of him, particularly in a quarterback-needy place like Oakland, troubles me. When I was in training camp with the Raiders, I remember GM Reggie McKenzie telling me Flynn wasn’t the most gifted athlete with the biggest cannon, but he was smart, confident and the right guy to lead the Raiders in a time of transition. Boom. Ten weeks later he’s on the street.

Finally back in his comfort zone, Green Bay, Flynn orchestrated a tie and two wins in his five games. He was good, not great. But I would submit that if you watched Flynn in the second half of the Minnesota tie and the two wins (Dallas and Atlanta), you’d see a quarterback who belongs on the roster of a good team, and starting for some teams. After trailing Minnesota (20-7), Atlanta (21-10) and Dallas (26-3) early in the third quarter, Flynn led Green Bay to 65 points in the three second halves and put up these numbers:

Completions/Attempts Completion % Yards Yards per Attempt Touchdowns Interceptions Rating
42-68 67.6 526 7.74 6 0 120.1

Bottom line: If you know what Flynn is as a quarterback—and former Packer exec McKenzie did know what he was—why be impatient with him? Especially when the realistic goal of the Raiders this year should have been to get the quarterback right for the future. Based on the last month, Oakland has zero idea who its quarterback is for 2014.

He pretty much nails it

Flynn is not a guy who will light up the league as a NFL starter but he's solid enough to fill in at a time of need. For terrible organizations like Oakland and Buffalo to lose patience immediately when they don't have better options speaks to why they are terrible.

He doesn't have the greatest arm (I'm surprised he didn't have surgery this year instead of continuing to play) and he has taken some bad sacks and made a couple dumb throws - but he's better than the guys who were the other options in both Buffalo and Oakland.
