When did they get rid of the shrubbery around Tiger Stadium? Why did they choose to do this?

You mean in the South End zone? I believe that was removed because several years back when the redid the field (drainage, undersurface, turf), the had to shift the field to the south by a few feet and that made the area behind the south end zone too narrow for comfort.

When was there ever any shrubs?

I don't remember any since 98'???

I was always on the field in the NW endzone though.

In the Life photographs from the 40s and 50s posted a while back, it looked like there were shrubs going down the sidelines too.

We lost the shrubs, but boy did we upgrade on the Golden Girls.

But I have no answers.

i believe that was pulled out within the last 3-4 years. Wish they would have kept them, it looked good.

The shrubs were around up through the mid-70s for sure and yes, they looked nice. However, I never knew why it was done (either drainage system as someone else noted, or perhaps Bob Brodhead wanting to make more seats).

AD Joe Alleva has already stated his intentions to make Tiger Stadium a "showplace" before they build the SEZ Upper. I'm sure greenery and shrubs will be part of it....

Then he had better get a good football team back in there to pay for those extra seats.

I have seen pictures from the 80's that have them, I figured they removed them to make the ground level seats. I think it looks much nicer with the shrubs

The shrubs were removed in the 80's at the time the field was centered in the stadium. The 50 on the field was 5 yards further north.

Something else I noticed and liked in that pic - the stadium (stairs, walls, etc) is not painted. It's very clean and I like that as well.

They got rid of the bushes, because they didn't want teams to come in and say to one another, "Hey, that's a nice bush." The chain linked fence gives the playing area a much more prison-like feel and it scares other teams. IMO I think we should put barbed wire on it.

Is it just perspective from the picture, or do the goal posts appear to be shorter?

I HATE to say this but... The last game I attended was the "Bring back the Magic" game. I know why sooo long but ... many health problems blah blah blah---Anyway, I was shocked how much Tiger Stadium has changed since the east bs was built. My God, the ts I knew is gone. It is so damn crowed it is awful. It seems as though they could have taken all that money and cleaned the outside up, removed asbestos and restored the rooms etc... for people willing to pay a hell of alot of money to stay there and made it very unique. It could have been done, don't tell me the asbestos is the excuse. Where there is money there will be a will and a way to happen. Someone just did'nt want it.

Awh!!!!! The powere that be!! Hah
