Should Woodward try to hire NCA&T’s Duane Ross as an Asst for T&F?

Was looking at NCAA Track and Field results. NC A&T finished 3rd in men’s and 4th in women’s. Really impressive IMO for a small school with probably limited resources. Shaver is 65 from what I can find and in 2019, his contract was extended through 2024. He earns 370k/yr with up to 260k/yr in pay for reaching certain milestones in the SEC’s and NCAA’s. Should LSU try and hire Ross as an assistant and possibly head coach in waiting? Anyone knowledgeable on the board with track and field have an opinion?

Link to his bio at A&T LINK

Edit: Ross was earning 130k/yr in salary in 2018. LINK

That has to be one of the best finishes in any sport for an HBCU

From the bio before this year’s finish:

Ross has amazingly won all four track and field indoor and outdoor titles in the same year twice (2017, 2019). At the 2017 NCAA Track and Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., the Aggie men finished 14th nationally to secure the highest finish by historically black university since N.C. Central finished fourth in 1974. They were third among schools not in the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, SEC and Pac 12.

So this year’s results look like he may now have the record for T&F.

Don’t know much about track and field but that resume looks impressive.

Do we have any current assistants who could move up?

Woodward doesn’t find assistants. The head coach does

Here are our current coaches. Don’t think any can match his personal experience as an Olympic and World Championship athlete. Perhaps Bennie Brazell has some.

Is Dennis going anywhere? Why are we looking for his replacement?

If these results are an indication of his ability to find and develop T&F athletes then he's going to make history at the first legit power 5 school that hires him and puts the resources behind the program.

No, just speculation on my part about the future of LSU T&F. It’s a history that is impressive for LSU that I hope we will continue to put in a good position to be competitive for the long term. Shaver will be nearing 70 at the end of his contract in 2024 and just thinking about it after seeing the NCAA results. As another poster just mentioned, if Ross can accomplish what he has at NC A&T with both Men’s and Women’s teams, I’d love to see what he can do at a larger school with more resources.

Makes a great case for a big time program in his future.

He can. Especially with the new transfer rules.

I talked about this in the championship thread. Shaver is going to rightfully be able to retire when he wants but this guy should certainly be a top candidate down the road

UGAs national championship coach just left Athens because of facilities. Don’t know where he is heading. Woodward likes to hire coaches that have a national title on resume.

Interesting. Are the T&F facilities that bad at UGA? Just read an article saying he had a salary of 430k. That’s higher than Shaver’s base.

Also just read that UGA hired away Southern Cal’s head coach, Caryl Smith Gilbert, this week. She just won the women’s outdoor championship. Must’ve offered good money. Also will be the first woman to lead a men’s team at Georgia. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but don’t think we’ve had that LSU either.
