re: Should LSU consider Baker for HC?

quote:I agree to a point, but the point I've made elsewhere still stands - who are you going to get (and be able to afford) in a year when so many vacancies already exist? And more are likely to open up by the end of the season (FSU, UNC come to mind).
But LSU is a top 5 job in the coaching world. I think you go get someone who has success and some skins on the wall.
We'd be casting our bait into a pond with a lot of other anglers hoping to catch the one or two really big bass that might be biting. Objectively speaking (without my P&G glasses), PSU and UF alone are going to push the competition for top-flight coaches. OSU, Arkie and VT are also going to throw the bank at prospects.
It's not a good time to be looking for a coach that's demonstrably better than Kelly.
- Are they out there? Yes.
- Will LSU actually be looking? Maybe to unlikely.
- Will LSU be able/willing to pay out a BK and staff buyout while also backing up a Brinks truck for the coach of their choice? Again, maybe
- Would LSU be willing to pay top dollar for a top coach AND swallow what's likely to be another horribly long guaranteed contract demanded by said prospect? Debatable.
Throw in the cost of getting rid of Kelly, hiring a new coach, be willing to eat another potential long-term contract AND still pay top NIL to build a roster that will placate the rabid LSU fans and compete in the near future? That's the million dollar question.
Don't get me wrong - I'd love to get someone better. I'm just not sure it's possible right now.

Just reading the coaching suggestions on this board helps me realize no one on this site knows a damn thing and im extremely happy that the AD doesn't make decisions according to any one here's opinion

Wife went to LSU. He coached at tech. This is home to him.
So he's good with taking a hometown discount? So why did we have to make him the highest paid assistant coach in all of college football when we hired him?
quote:
Would he do worse than Kelly?
I have no clue. He's never had to do it before.
quote:
Consider BK hired a HS coach to be our DB coach and Sloan as OC.
Yeah, BK blows.
quote:
They have staff that compiles databases on candidates to choose. I think he's wise enough to make a good choice.
Maybe. Maybe not.
quote:
That's what he's entrusted with doing now. He was successful at Ole Miss and helped get our collective going here. He literally was brought in to take some of that off Kelly's plate.
To an extent. I'm not sure he has say in who LSU goes after over the HC and/or coordinators.

Or, just spit ballin':
Kirby Smart.
Dan Lanning.
Ryan Day.
Even Dabo and Lincoln Riley were great hires from asst coach positions
"Skins" on the wall elsewhere don't always translate to the new job. You want to go poach Belichik? Nah, just hire a good coach.

Did you watch the defense Saturday against Vanderbilt? I mean besides holding them one time in the first half they didn't punt again till 8 minutes and 55 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Sorry we might have a good defense but we do not have a very good or an elite defense. And no sir from what I seen. Don't need him as a head coach that's for sure

No thanks. I want a HC that can find a DC competent enough to slow down a mobile QB. Baker has proven over and over that he can't do this. Not only can't he do this, but he triples down on what doesn't work.
He's a fraud just like his HC.

He wouldn't be worse than BK. Plus you wouldn't have to come up with all the buyouts for the entire staff. Just Bk and the offense. I say give it a shot. Continue his deal through 2030 with a insignificant buyout and pay him 5 million a year.

Kirby was not the first one offered for the Georgia job
Who turned them down? And why did all those proven head coaches turn them down? Also, that does not refute my point which is that "a proven head coach" is not necessarily a requirement.
quote:
Georgia was also at a much different point in their program than LSU
How so? Georgia's record the last few years of Richt's tenure is comparable to LSU's previous few years. Both are big time programs in the SEC. I don't think they are very different at all.
quote:
Blake Baker has not been the top DC in football for 8 years.
I never said he was.
quote:
Blake and Kirby are not on the same level.
Again, I never said that they are. But they aren't as far apart as you are suggesting. Blake is 43 and has been a very successful DC in the SEC for 4 years. In December 2015, Kirby was 39 (almost 40) and had been a very successful DC in the SEC for 8 years. Sure, Kirby had more awards at that point in his career but there aren't any huge differences in their careers at this point. Very similar trajectories.
I'm not saying Baker should absolutely be our next HC. I'm just giving examples of why your narrative of "we have to hire someone with proven HC experience" is bullshite and you have said nothing to defend that narrative. Please try to stay on topic.
quote:
But just hiring Blake is the wrong decision and its not even up for debate lol.
"It's not even up for debate" because Josh Pate thinks LSU is a top 5 coaching destination and IM_4_LSU said so.

Hell he may. be able to hire Orgeron as DL Coach or DC. If we fire Woodward.
Do not want that a-hole anywhere near our program anymore... frick him, and thanks for the natty, but frick him

Sure. You got $53 Mil for the BK buyout.
That’s what the TV contract generates every year.
So, yes. The program could buy out CBK tomorrow.

Nope. Interim until we find a good fit.
Posted on 10/20/25 at 5:45 pm to BayouCowboy
Just as well check to see if Mike Archer is available.
Posted on 10/20/25 at 5:54 pm to BayouCowboy
If Woodward runs out of ideas, blank checks or simply gets neutered from the aforementioned approach, I could see him considering since it worked for notre dame.

You ask this after Saturday’s embarrassment…..
Add in Ole Miss and you know. This was a dumb question/thought

Why what adjustments has he made in our 2 losses, the D has sucked.

I'd rather take a chance on someone young and unproven than give another "white whale" a bloated longterm contract.
Screw that. Any new coach had better have some gray hair and experience running a winning program at a major conference.

Both of our coordinators belong in the Sunbelt
