no offense but couldn't they be wondering the same thing.
lsu loses some big time players and just because they bring back a lot of starters we should catapult them to number 1 because they looked good against a joke of a team in the bowl?

not trying to flame just as an outsider i don't get how the worst passing team in the country could lose it's best defensive players and come back number 1.
118 of 209 (56.5%) 1,411 yards 7 TDs 10 INTs
i just don't see a natl title team with that but hell i didn't see one this time last year in auburn

1. what makes you think out passing game will be the same as last season?
2. it's called recruiting...we do it very well. And there were a TON of freshmen and sophomores that played last year.

thats probably why we didn't win a NC last year. Its a new season...why is this so hard to comprehend?

I know those numbers are shocking, but I think many people are basing that prediction based on what this team did inspite of that. Regardless of how we got there, 11-2 in the toughest division in the country is still pretty damn good. We can't get any worse production from the QBs, so with Kragthorpe, JJ a senior, Mett waiting in the wings and our receiving corps, there's reason to be optimistic that the passing game will improve.

As to the worst passing team, I will point out that the team lost 2 games, one to the eventual undefeated national champion and one to a hot Arkansas team when our guys were pretty banged up, while playing in the toughest division in college football + Florida (FWIW). With improvement at the QB position, that record could get better. And it doesn't have to get much better to be at the top of the rankings.
In looking at what we lose on defense, the analysis is incomplete until you have also looked at what is coming in to replace them. There's more quality depth there than even Ohio State can lay claim to.

And all the Ohio State guy is saying the same could be said for Oregon. We know our team very intimately, so we know who is replacing our huge losses. We don't know Oregon as well--they may (and likely do) believe in their replacements just as much as we do.
I think it's safe to say that while Oregon may be filling more losses, LSU will be filling bigger losses. We'll see come September who does the better job of filling those holes. But to think that LSU is just going to show up and blow Oregon out of Jerry's World is beyond fricking stupid and based on nothing but embarrassing homerism.

He's not really saying that. The post to which I responded simply said he didn't see how we can be highly rated for the coming season with all the skill on defense we're losing and with a putrid offense last year. I was pointing out the holes in that analysis. In terms of what we're losing vs. what Oregon is losing, I made the same point you're making in an earlier post responding to the OP.

First of all, you're not including Lee's numbers which were substancial. Second, virtually every LSU fan agrees with you. We don't see a BCSNC team producing that little in the passing game either. Guess that's why they didn't win it all. The point is that LSU was a very close 2nd to the best team in the conference. Thanks to a terrific defense most of the year, the Tigers really only needed to be prolific offensively five times last season. In three of the five, the offense came through. Two times they didn't and lost both games by a score. Great defensive players have departed but the obvious glut of talent on defense portends more greatness from that group. With a more consistant offense expected, the 2011 LSU Tigers will be very tough to beat. They will be favored to win at least 10 of their 12 scheduled games and the other two are winnable to say the least.

With the exception of Arizona, we haven't exactly proved to be dominate over the Pac 10. Az State, OR State, and WashU all played us tough. What makes you think Oregon won't either?

they just got the premier 5 * "athlete" out of Compton.
I presume we will see some of him, in special teams.

It's because of who will step in to replace those guys FFO. Patrick Peterson was great, stepping in will be Tyrannosaurus Rex. Drake Nevis was great too, but the list of players we have waiting and ready to fill his spot is unreal. Where we will take a big hit is Kelvin Shep. He was our other defensive coach, and the defense as a whole will suffer with him out, which is why I see his graduation as the worst part of our grads/ early declares.
Fortunately, everyone else besides TT and 1 OL come back. 17/22 starters returning is why we are ranked so highly. And considering the backups to the majority of those players we lost saw significant and highly productive playing time, Tiger fans are correct to have high hopes.

That's all Oregon is, hype. We will be one of the best teams in the country. We have the speed to match them and we are stronger.

How does that compare with what LSU is losing?
From another thread:

Oregon keeps their QB and RB, but losses most of their lineman and WRs.
From another post about Oregon:
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D. Thomas and L. James will both be Jr's next year.
On offense, it does look like they are losing two starting WRs (D.J. Davis and Jeff Maehl) as well as three offensive lineman (LT - Bo Thran, RG - C.E. Kaiser and C - Jordan Holmes).
On defense they are losing three of their defensive lineman (DE - Kenny Rowe, DT - Zak Clark and DT - Brandon Blair) two of their linebackers (MLB - Casey Matthews and WLB - Spencer Paysinger) and one cornerback (CB - Talmadge Jackson III).
Looks like they return six starters on offense and five starters on defense.
According to their depth chart it looks like there are a lot of Sophmores and Juniors on the team.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
quote:

Casey Matthews on defense and Jeff Maehl on offense are big losses for Oregon.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LSU is losing one offensive lineman (LT - Joseph Barksdale) one wide reciver (WR - Terrance Tolliver) two defensive linemen (DT - Drake Nevis and DT - Pep Levingston) one linebacker (MLB - Kelvin Sheppard) and one cornerback (CB - Patrick Peterson) and a part time starter (S - Jai Eugene)
Looks like LSU will return nine starters on offense and seven starters on defense. The starters we lose on defense however are three big ones in PP, KS and Nevis. We also lose our kicker (Josh Jasper), punter (Helton) and kick returner (Patrick Peterson).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since then, Ridley has declared for the NFL draft, so we lose him as well.

They bring back their coach, QB, and all American RB. It is going to be a very tough game. And LSU struggles against this type of offense (see Ole Miss)
I'm not going to look but I bet Ole Myth's O and D line are better than OR. You can't ignore the fact that AU did not have a great D but still stopped them. If AU would have used a FB and ran right at them the game wouldn't have been as close as it was

Seriously, what's with the Oregon hype?
they have elite speed athletes galore at their disposal in DeAnthony Thomas, Lache Seastrunk, Kenjon Barner, and LaMichael James. Also, they return their QB in Darron Thomas who was solid last year for them. Chip Kelly is an offensive genius.
Posted on 2/9/11 at 3:40 pm to Suntiger
Some great points have been made in this thread and Oregon is not all hype. We MUST beat their offensive line to stop them and I'm not certain we will, we don't have a Fairley. Defensively they lose almost everything and we should dominate them up front, Brandon Bair was maybe their most important guy. However, the top playmakers return on both sides of the ball (Thomas, James, Huff, Harris, Boyett) and Harris was the only return man better than Peterson last year. It's not being talked about much but special teams could play a huge role in keeping Oregon close or actually deciding the game in its favor. I like LSU but it won't be the cakewalk some think it will be.
