SEC Media Contracts:

What are the terms of the SEC's contracts with CBS and ESPN? My understanding is that CBS gets first pick but the ESPN contract is longer running? Can anyone clarify please?
Point of the question: I'd like to see Slive renegotiate some of these contracts to give schools more say in kickoff times. Not really talking about the 11am games bc I know that isnt CBS or ESPN, but all the 230 games. For instance, LSU-UF should be a night game at home. The Bama game won't be a night game, the UT game likely wont be either. The AU game may be?
I hate how the schools are completely at the mercy of the networks. At what point do conferences get to take back some of that power?

The tv networks have $$$$$. The SEC wants$$$$$$. We play when they ask us too because that equals$$$$$$
See how this works.

Whenever the contract is up for renewal in 12 years.

I get that, but from a marketing standpoint at some point your product can become so valuable enough of the power at the negotiation table shifts. I'd say expansion into new tv markets and 5 titles in a row posits us nicely for that?

What about the "look-ins" Slive is always talking about when the landscape changes? We still have to wait 12 years with the addition of A&M and if another SEC school wins #6?

From a marketing perspective 2:30 is a preferred time slot as it makes more money and attracts more viewers. Look up what regular season games have the most viewers. In other parts of the country people do stuff on Saturday night other than watching football.

So why is the 7 slot "primetime?"

This.
The SEC might have the power to change the contract, but the only thing that is going to change is for the conference to get more money out of the deal at the end of the day. We want the money and to get the most of it, the tv networks are going to dictate when games are played.

It's not. That's why most games are on during the early afternoon. 2:30 is the prime spot to play.

They wont, i just wish CBS was do more than 1 night game a year

Slive has publicly stated that he is going to renogotiate the television contracts this offseason given the addition of TAMu. A renegotiation is the only way that the SEC can monetize their new access to the Texas television market. I would love for Slive to haggle over start times and allow member institutions to recapture some control over their own kickoffs and campuses, but I suspect money will be the sole focal point.

CBS generally brings in ratings close to the ABC night game just by having re-runs of their weeknight shows 48 Hours, CSI, etc. Since it obviously costs way more to produce a live football broadcast then just show reruns of shows you already have, I'd imagine it's financially better for them to not have a primetime game on a regular basis.

ABC (6.37 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.2, #1) was still the network to beat on Saturday with its coverage of "Saturday Night College Football" (6.37 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.2, #1).
The silver then went to CBS (4.62 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.0, #2) with encores of "Person of Interest" (3.94 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T5), "Unforgettable" (4.95 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.0, #4) and the season premiere of "48 Hours Mystery" (4.97 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.2, #2).

Gotcha. I just wish Slive would play a little hard ball with em. Let the schools have more say in their kickoff times or pay a higher premium to air those games.

Problem is, what leverage does the SEC have? Slive isn't going to walk away from CBS, that's obvious. What can he pressure with to get CBS to deviate from their plans at all? ESPN wouldn't pay the amount that CBS is for one extra game a week, and there isn't any other viable options that I know of.

quote:ya, but they are producing the football game anyway-- just at 2:30. were not asking for more cbs, just a different time slot.

Slive should tell CBS they can have their exclusive window at 2:30 that they want, but can not have it for the 1 night game they do. Do you think it's good for the SEC to have 4 games kicking off before noon (Central) and only 1 game going on at a time the rest of the day? (Not counting Ole Miss since it's not on the SEC TV contract)

There is nothing wrong with games kicking off at noon. If I recall, one of ESPN's highest rated games this year so far was the Auburn/Utah State game and it kicked off at 11:00 a.m. central time. CBS doesn't want to do night games. They have made that clear. They make more money in advertising during the early afternoon games just as every other network does. Enough with all this night game whining bullshite.

That's an unfair characterization. It's not whining, it's a laudable and understandable impulse to protect a longstanding and inviolable LSU tradition: night games in Tiger Stadium. That's an essential component of our program's identity which is currently under seige. I understand better than most the binding contractual obligations that the SEC has entered into, but the LSU administration should be utilizing every tactic at its disposal to ensure marquee night games each and every year. The television networks aren't invincible demi-gods. We don't have to acquiesce to their every whim. There is nothing wrong with discussing ways that LSU might exploit a contract renegotiation to wrest back some control over kickoff times.

CBS contract runs through 2023
Same length for ESPN
That's about 3 BILLION dollars in contracts for those of you counting. And it's not just football games.

Unfortunately for LSU, they're not the ones doing the negotiating. And I don't see the SEC trying to fight for something that 1 member school wants, especially since the other 11 would probably consider it a gameday advantage(night games in TS).
