People bitch about TOPS but say little about Vandy and Stanford's "academic scholarships" and I use the term loosely as it's a convenient pool of money to ensure athletic success

I'd rate McDonnel above Savage

I guess but McDonnel has had some talented teams only to come up short. At least Savage has won a title.

I wouldn’t say top 5 at all and debatable top 10 coach. Van Horns teams choke about as much as Mike Martins do
cws records since 2010:

ark: 6-6, 3 app
fsu: 4-6, 3 app
lsu: 4-7, 3 app

it's funny how ignorant lsu fans disparage martin and van horn yet both have a better cws record than pm over the last 9 years.

not sure how you can leave out brian o'connor. since 2010 at the cws, 11-6 on 3 appearances with a nc.

i probably wouldn't put tadlock there just yet although he is rising.

also, if you're going to put pm on there, van horn should go on there too if cws records mean anything given that he has a better record on the same number of appearances since 2010.

otherwise, you hit the bullseye with that list.

cws since 2010:
lsu: 4-7, 3 app
or st: 10-6, 3 app, 1 nc
fsu: 4-6, 3 app
fla: 13-13, 7 app, 1 nc
tcu: 11-10, 5 app
ariz: 10-3, 2 app, 1 nc
uva: 11-6, 3 app, 1 nc
vandy: 11-6, 3 app, 1 nc
ucla: 9-5, 3 app, 1 nc
scar: 15-4, 3 app, 2 nc
ark: 6-6, 3 app

Convenient not to include 2009 and make it an even ten years.

Sort of obvious

Great point but that argument relies on discounting Mainieri’s best team 09 and including Van Horn’s best team 18.

Since 2007 (both coaches in the SEC)

Van Horn is 8-8 in 4 appearances/ 1 runner up
Mainieri is 9-8 in 4 appearances/ 1 title & 1 runner up

I still think Van Horn is much better than Martin is at this point in time.

I forgot about O’Connor honestly. He is definitely top 10

i in no way think van horn is better than pm. including '09 definitely puts pm squarely in the top 10 over that time frame. however, the difference between the two is not nearly is big as the typical rantard thinks.

agreed. how much is debatable. martin is legit but has some sort of glass lid over the basket.

Baseball America released their Unsigned 2018 BA 500 Players Headed To College.

86 Jaden Hill, RHP Louisiana State
109 Landon Marceaux, RHP Louisiana State
183 Will Ripoll, RHP Louisiana State
195 C.J. Willis, C Louisiana State
225 Cole Henry, RHP Louisiana State
289 Chase Costello, RHP Louisiana State
465 Giovanni DiGiacomo, OF Louisiana State
490 Drew Bianco, 3B Louisiana State

Louisiana State leads all schools with eight players from the BA 500 in its incoming freshman class. Florida State, Louisville, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt all bring in six.

Academic scholarships are an “unfair advantage”? That’s a shitty way of looking at it.

They seem to target pitchers who value the education. Vandy is highly regarded from an academic perspective...LSU is average at best. MLB drafts ~1200 kids every year...and MLB has ~ the same number of active players. The odds are not very good.

I graduated from LSU but if my son was in that situation, I'd push him to attend Rice or Vandy.

Vandy either targets rich kids who can pay or poor kids who can get full financial aid from the university without it counting toward baseball money. The education level doesn't matter.

Your thoughts on Riggs Threadgill? He plays in Fredericksburg, TX. I only mention that as my dad and brother live there.

Throws in the mid 90s from what I've read. Played in a Texas hs all star game. That's all I could find on him. Seemed to be under the radar, but could be a live arm out of the pen if the velo numbers were accurate.

I was very wrong on Arky this year. Even though I thought they were good, I assumed they would fall apart on the second half (per usual). Never happened. They won’t get another shot for a long time imo.

Seems to be they've almost flip flopped for the near term. Used to always struggle with hitting but have elite pitching, now they have elite hitting but could start to struggle with pitching what they're losing off this year's team and not really adding many ready to go from day 1 arms (I guess again the list doesn't include JUCO guys though).

I will say while they can absolutely hit now a few of those guys are horrible at fielding. Their 3B had 15 errors and fielded .904 on the season (Martin). Their LF had 7 errors and fielded .945 (Kjerstad). CF Fletcher had 4 errors and fielded .976. 2B Shaddy 9 errors and fielded .956.

Think they ended up one of if not worst fielding team in SEC (not that it mattered since they made the Final, but elite pitching can cover up poor fielding at times). Well, I guess it did matter some since they blew and easy foul pop fly to win the title.

Their resumes are pretty similar but head to head Maineri owns Van Horn

It's unreal what they are able to bring in. Get commits from like 11 of the Top 100 players, and 5 still end up making it in. Including 4 in the Top 60 and 2 in the Top 35.

On a side note no way Stewart ends up at MSU, everything I've read said he will go to JUCO for a year and re-enter draft.

Arkansas was a slow pitch softball team. No fielding, all bat.
