Does anybody have any insight (or just gossip) on how the young backs are doing in pass blocking?
This is what usually keeps them off the field early in their careers.
They have come from a situation where they never blocked or if they did they were stronger than the D Linemen.
That's no longer true and they will be expected to pick up blitzs and know the blocking schemes.

So it should be easy to name them.

Ole Miss
Auburn
Clemson

Now, which of those run double TEs and a FB, ram it up the middle offense?

Honestly, no. Impossible for us as fans to know because we aren't seeing anything.

That said, I have watched Emery's HS film and noted his blocking ability. Hope it translates, but as with all frosh RBs, this will be the biggest question mark with him.

Lanard is a good blocker, but of course he's not one of the "young backs".

The one saving grace is, or hopefully is, we shouldn't be running 5-6 second to develop play action pass plays this season. Should be getting the ball out quickly and running more screens. This will help.

Still need downfield passing on deep routes, which requires competent blocking from the line and backfield. We aren't nickel and diming SEC teams up and down the field.

Agree, and if reports (and practice videos) are to be believed, it's still a part of the offense.

BUT...at least it's not the ONLY part of the passing game.

I refer you to last year's Bama game when we were backed up against the goal line. PA slow developing pass play wasn't the call to make there, but frankly, that WAS our passing game last year and in fact the past several years. Just hope that's no longer the case.

I think Les Miles jerks off to the The Little Giants when that new kid comes in and says “fullback... power I”

When you factor in that some guys got more targets than they would have in a real game it's not as bad. 6 of the 8 drops may have come from players that wont start

And if memory serves Clemson three it down the field. They didn’t dink and dunk much.

It always amazed me that with the mismatches we had at receiver - Jarvis and Odell - that we didn't throw a bomb every set of downs.

...Against Bama, that is. We couldn't do anything else.

Last season: OMG! We need to Getrid if the ball quickly! The only teams to beat Bama did just st that!

ThiS summer: I heart our old offense with long developing pass plays and fullbacks, and tight ends...

What are you talking about?

You need to be able to pass in the short, intermediate and long game. We didn't have that ability last season.

You are losing it as the season approaches.

We did, a while back. I dunno if you've noticed, but we haven't beaten Bama in 8 consecutive tries, including 3 shutouts in the State of Louisiana.
1 shuout in 12 years vs 2 /3 for this regime.
Just clearing the water with the reality that things are going in reverse, including the worst loss since Saban lost to Bama 31-0 2002, but we'll see this year.

It's plain and simple we have to be able to use the middle of the field. Use the tight ends and quick slants. Another thing please oh please let's finally use the running backs in the passing game. We finally have a qb that's consistent and hopefully the play calls use these weapons. Anyway I am pumped

Bama has known for three years at least that they could overwhelm our offensive line without blitzing. Last year they knew they could dominate so much that they left two and three deep.. then played man underneath and took away even short passes. There was no,separation at all by our receivers in anyway related to the time our QB had to throw. Pretty much the same for the last three years.

Bama plays man until the first break and then zone. Very difficult to read and break. Clemson got time to throw and Lawrence picked them apart.
Clemson also got enough movement on the line of scrimmage to run the ball.

Hopefull that our line play is good enough so that our QB has a chance to make a difference.

In 2017 in T town Etling and Chark missed on four or five deep connections.

In 2015 we were in the game until Harris threw the interception early in the second half.
