All of that tells me the defense does make plays when they need to

Do they? In both the Texas and Alabama games the defense could not stop the opponent from scoring in the second half. UT scored on every 2nd half possession and Bama scored on all but 1. LSU scored 45 and 46 points in those games. Yet, they needed to recover onsides kicks in both to preserve victory. Had they not recovered those kicks it is VERY likely LSU doesn't win those games because the defense simply could not stop the opposing offense at that point.

The best you can say about this defense is that it has it's moments and they fortunately haven't been put in a do or die scenario because the offense has been so great at answering the bell time and time again. Will it be enough to win a championship? We'll see. But unless you are looking through purple shaded lenses, I don't think anyone wants to see this defense on the field against a good offense late when LSU MUST have a stop

O has a comfortable lead. Now, they are being ridiculed, and that should generate emotion.
You may be correct, but I would have thought the Ole Miss “performance” would have accomplished this.
I think one side of the ball has become complacent now that the other side has finally gotten their shite together. The effort, focus is just not there with any consistency.

What’s the difference between a 3 play scoring drive and all the 3 and outs our offense has had over the last 10 years? It’s just not a viable excuse.

Exactly! This is an outstanding point. Hell, does anyone think that the offensive big uglies don't get gassed when they're running uptempo?

but this thread reminds me of a teenage girl complaining about the floor mats of her BMW that daddy bought her for graduation.
frick the floor mats, fans are just concerned that the seat belts and airbags may not work when we run into a situation that we can’t accelerate out of.

if LSU’s offense is going to insist on these multiple two-minute scoring drives.

i understand the sentiment, but thats what makes this offense so dangerous, aggression.

if you can score on 1 play, you do it, over and over again.

Defense just needs to hold serve and make plays

I understand the arguments about the effect a prolific offense can have on a defense, but that might mean the defense is 25th instead of 5th in the nation, not 44th. I think the defense will play better when it has to, but all the big plays being allowed are definitely a concern.

this is me as well. i knew the defense would take a step back if TOP went up 5-8 minutes for the opponent, which is what happened against Vandy. They had 18 possessions. Im good with that.

That has not been the case the last 3 games. these are assignment breakdowns and lapses in playcalling.

"What's the difference between a two minute scoring drive, and a three and out? The two minute scoring drive is longer. Why is it that LSU's offense put up zero points, and had multiple three and outs last year, but the defense held Alabama's high powered offense under 30, while this year's defense barely held Ole Miss under 40, despite being on the field for LESS time?... Poor tackling, bad angles, you named it already. But people still make the same lousy excuses."

Yep. All they have to do is play the way that they did last night and that will shut people up.

Committee putting us at 2 was the best thing that could have happened. Added even more fuel to the unstoppable fire that is LSU football. Defense always had the talent they just had to adjust to more zone coverage and find more creative ways to apply pressure. That in turn lead us to playing more freshman like Brooks, Hampton, Flott and Ward. This defense is starting to hit stride at the perfect time.
