For the record, they played a few games against Florida, A&M, Auburn, Ms.St., Alabama this year. In those games I think he went 11/32 with a couple of homers. I was pulling those stats together in my phone so I might be off on that but I think that’s how he did against the SEC. I’m sure he wasn’t facing their Friday night guys every time, but….

Sounds like a great hitter. Won’t be our catcher though by the sound of his defense

Looks like a great pick up. The '22 roster is going to be very talented.

Just gotta pick up some help on the mound.

2 for 3 with a double against Bednar in the regional. That’ll work.

I drew a card in cards against humanity tonight as I opened this thread and it was the biggest blackest Dick. Coincidence?

Stolen bases have more to do with who's pitching than catching, believe it or not.

Pitching has a lot to do with it, but giving up the number of steals he gave up is alarming (only throwing out 19% of runners).

To blame it on the pitcher(s) would mean that all of their pitchers were a) terrible at holding men on base and/or b) extremely slow to the plate. It is unlikely that ALL of their pitchers fell into those categories. It is more likely there was a deficiency at catcher (hopefully one that can be corrected).

I don't disagree that it's partially on the catcher, but it's not as simple as you make it out to be. For a catcher it's about release, arm strength, and accuracy. None of those matter much if the pitcher holds runners poorly, are slow to the plate, and don't execute pitches - and the pitching coach isn't keen on the situation and intent of the running game. It's a great big world out there. A bad pitcher and pitching coach can make a good catcher look pretty bad.

Nobody throws runners out. The best catchers at any level throw out about 35 percent of runners. Ivan Rodriguez is probably the greatest catcher at throwing out runners and no way you ever tried that dude because you would be out by a mile. He threw out 45% for his career which is bananas insane. Yadi Molina throws out 40%.

Bottom line is don’t worry about that part when regarding what’s important for a catcher

Also, people should be stealing all the time and I don’t understand why they don’t

I tend to agree. Milazzo is an elite defensive catcher and if CJJ is as good as purported then he should be able to turn him into something serviceable at the dish.

This guy is coming in to fill another role. DH perhaps? Wasn’t even the primary catcher at Samford. Doubt he’ll supplant Milazzo

I don't think it's simple at all. I'm just pointing out that to blame it on the pitchers dictates that ALL of their pitchers sucked at their job. It is far more likely that catcher was not good at throwing out runners.

He's an insurance policy that could pay off bigly. From his perspective, LSU is a potential catapult to money.

I’d rather a few extra steals vs an automatic arse out.

I would take 1/10 batting vs 1/10 runners thrown out any day.

Now that said Millazo is going to have to step up to play this year.

That's a lot better than McManus' 19%. Additionally, I believe Milazo has thrown out almost 60% for his career (I stand ready to be corrected if someone fact checks this and I'm wrong).

Sure 19% is bad but it’s not like anyone out there is just hosing everyone and can shutdown a run game by himself. Idk what millazzo percentage is although 60 seems astronomical but whatever it is the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Good arm catcher is just the cherry on top

Just checked. LSU opponents stole 45 bases in 63 attempts this season. Millazo kept them from running but he wasn’t throwing them out either when they did: In fact, he’s under 30%.
