listening to Coach O on OTB he said "we have to find us some safeties" sounds like that position is really up for grabs. This should be an interesting spring. Hampton is already disadvantaged since he will be playing baseball.

Sage Ryan will be a starter. O just can’t say that in February.

Maybe Hampton needs to pick one sport, because it seems to me he's not excelling in either one at the moment

While I don't think this is farfetched, Derrick Davis has apparently already been turning heads as well. And I think Jordan Toles will also be much better I just cant wait!

With Toles, Hampton, Harris, Davis, Ryan and Langlois there is enough talent that we should get quality play out of the safety position.

The 2 safety spots are wide open competition this year with no one really tagged as a definite starter and new defensive coaches. This should be one of the more interesting competitions to watch.

Stingley’ dad called Hampton the best safety in the nation the other day lol. Said he wasn’t good because of scheme last year

I think a lot of Hamptons problems last year were scheme related, dudes way too athletic to be out of position as much as he was last year

Ik everybody likes to talk of Sage Ryan and rightfully so but don’t be shocked if Derrick Davis Jr. gets a nod at one of those safety spots. The staff is really high on him and he’s been impressive so far

I disagree. As much as we all love Chad Jones as the premier two sport athlete, the reality is that he only pitched 6 innings and had 35 at bats in 2009. They were all exciting but he wasn't some huge contributor in both sports as many think. Same goes for Jared Mitchell, he did not contribute to the football team in any real way. His best year was 2007 with 13 catches.

Back to Hampton. Freshman year of football he barely played until the end of the year and flashed while he was on the field. Freshman year of baseball started slow but that would be expected given the fact that the football team played until mid Jan (Natty) and then the season was cut to only 17 games.

Soph football year, day 1 starter after not having off season program and was part of the worst coached defenses that we have ever seen. Communication was non existent and I don't blame any single player for the performance of 2020. Pelini was paid over 6mil to leave for a reason. Soph season of baseball is 3 games in. The idea that he would walk into the starting line up in general is just dumb. The goal with these type of two sport athletes is to get them up to speed mid way through the year. Still has plenty of time and from what I saw this weekend, no one should think he doesn't have a path to eventually take a starting spot or be a heavy rotational player by mid year.

You guys are funny. I've never seen a more confidant fan base than the early 80's when the top running back in America walked off West Jefferson's campus onto the LSU Tigers, who had no established back.

Garry James was a slam dunk starter. We were right about one thing: LSU had an All SEC freshman back, but his name was Dalton Hilliard.

Sage Ryan is a great athlete. So is Derrick Davis. If I had to bet on one starting at safety I'd bet on Davis.

I think Sage probably works in more as Nickel at first, I think DDjr is going to be our starting FS first game, that dude is a player. Really going to need somebody to step up and be the voice for the defense, we lacked leadership on that side of the ball last year as well

The only reason I disagree with this is because I believe Ward has earned the first crack at Nickel, especially after his play to end the year last year.

Obviously we are oozing with talent in the secondary and I think Sage is gonna be a dominant tiger for 3 years. Needless to say, this is a good problem to have.

I agree. Hampton needs to pick one sport and focus on it. Too much change

Hampton in the back-end of 2019 helped us get through Delpit's injury and return to health. His 2019 vs. 2020 was night and day. Hoping the new D system breathes new life into his game.
