What if Miles had lost 5 games in his 3rd year like Saban did, including getting blown out in the Cartoon Bowl? It took Miles 2 seasons & 6 games before he got his 5th loss. Conversely, Miles went out & won the National Championship his 3rd year.

Why does Saban get a Pass for this? How would you have reacted if Miles had lost 5 games in year 3?

How many "Saban Sucks arse!! He must Geaux!!" posts were there? How many called for Saban's head during 2002?

The recent history was different but the talent level that Saban inherited was A LOT higher than people seem to remember. Dinardo could recruit very well. He just couldn't coach.

It's the past and people must not remember this. I remember sitting in that stadium losing to UAB - cannot remember who the coach was...but we lost to UAB.

Because expectations were lower, and the talent, although very good, was not as heralded as it is now.

I think LSU's situation is more like Florida's last year, except Florida had Tebow. But coming off a NC with a suspect defensive backfield. Florida lost 4 or 5 games last year. I wonder if UF fans were moaning about their program falling back to pre-spurrier levels?

Saban was coming off a 10-3 SEC Title season. Different stages, how so?

Sometimes I wonder if people are even thinking. Seriously; you'd compare taking over AFTER Dinardo and losing 5 to getting 50 hung on you twice after winning a MNC? Seriously?

Do you remember UT the next game? Alabama that year - when was the last time we beat them in TS again? How about GT in the Peach Bowl? How about UT in the SECCG the year after? Illinois in the Sugar. Yeah, everyone wanted Saban fired.

2002 had a horrific offense. 2008 has a horrific defense. Pretty comparable.

That is the point. Saban's teams had talent to win, but they lost too. But he got a pass for losing to UAB, even though he had the talent to beat TN.

Geez - I also remember sitting in Orlando watching that Iowa receiver run 50yds to beat us in the Capital One bowl...our secondary had no idea of where they were on the field...who was the coach then?

Maybe because it was his 4th game as coach here?

We were coachless that game.

He just did it again vs. La Monroe - and the talent is no where near equal...coaching or lack of lost both games.

was the first for LSU in quite a while, and we had not yet won NC. Don't get me wrong, I'm content with Miles, but not DC situation. It's only natural that many fans will have quick trigger once our success level fell off a bit. Was impossible for Miles to maintain it anyway. We're not going downhill. Though we do need to address DC to prevent prolonged slide.

3 seasons & 3 recruiting classes after DiNardo.

I wonder that too. As an LSU fan, I would have thought LSU fans would have shown support for the Team & the Coach who just brought the National Championship here in January 2008. Guess things have changed..

Jesus Christ, did you really need to start a new thread to reassert the same terrible argument that had already been rebutted in other, related threads?

Here is why your position is nonsensical:

(1) Saban was rebuilding LSU. We were a lower tier program which had strugggled through a decade of incompetence. We certainly didn't have the depth or talent that we have now. A mediocre year (which still ended in a NYD bowl) was acceptable at that juncture;

(2) You've forgotten how that season actually progressed. There were numerous mitigating factors. After losing the opener on the road to VT, we actually won five straight, including a blowout of UF at the Swamp. Then we lost our starting QB (Mauck) to injury. He was replaced by a bumbling young buffoon, Marcus Randall. We also lost our starting safety (Damien James) to discipline issues in the middle of that season;

(3) Even in that down year, the defense never, ever, ever, ever performed as atrociously as it has this year against UF and UGA. Never. Ever. Even when it was overmatched against a much more talented UT team with Roy Williams in the Cotton Bowl. Even in the bad loss to Alabama at home.

Yep, last year. This year they're undefeated and #2 in the nation. Next year they may lost 5 games. But they'll be in the SECCG this year in his second season, just like he did at LSU.
