It doesn’t really cut both ways. Wade’s behavior speaks to how severe he thought things were. That will always be what it is.

When he finally met with LSU, his reinstatement was rather seamless. That should have happened weeks earlier.

So how do you explain the subsequent actions by him, the ncaa, and LSU other than “turns out things are not that severe.”

Do you think he’s using the same techniques on this recruiting class as he did on the smart/Reid class? If so do you think he’s just that brazen and doesn’t think the ncaa is looking closely at him? Do you think he didn’t need to pay players all along but was doing it for shits and giggs?

What has happened in the year since everything was first reported does not indicate a guy who thinks he’s dead to rights nor an administration that thinks he’s cooked.

I think he's safe as long as the NCAA doesn't sanction LSU. So it's business as usual unless that happens.

The NCAA did not clear LSU over the Smart thing. They are on record as to saying no investigation was going to take place until after the FBI trial was over. Deductive reasoning says Smart's allowance to play as "at your own risk" type of thing.

I would think he is still playing the game in some form or fashion. Hopefully he stays on the phone & trusts someone else to do this, like veteran coaches do.

He didn’t sit out while LSU made a tournament run, then forfeit all his bonus money for talking about a scholarship

You said you don't get a straight answer to this... here it is:

He sat out because he got bad legal advice... plain and simple

Alleva suspended him not because of the Yahoo report but because of him refusing to meet with the admin.

It's a meeting that plainly shouldn't have been called for, and certainly not with the NCAA INVITED to be there.

I'm not saying Wade is innocent, but anyone with eyes and a brain can read reports of ncaa sanctions and why the best course of action is always to tell them "frick off, make something stick"

Want examples? Look at Mizzou getting shafted, while UNC literally had nothing happen.

Circle back:

based on what?

Do you think Wade told his counsel that he was talking about a scholarship, and they still said do not talk to LSU under any circumstance?

I do agree with you. He still got bad legal advice. He very easily could have been back coaching immediately under your premise of "frick off, make something stick", whether he did wrong or not. Him refusing to meet with LSU for weeks made it much worse. All under the presumption that he did something wrong.

But again the problem that led to the bad legal advice was Joe Alleva being an idiot and trying to invite the NCAA in with open arms...

We are mostly in agreement I think, I assume our differences are where to place blame.

For me, Alleva botched this from go by bowing to media pressure (ask Duke Lacrosse about his history of doing that), and then Wade and his legal team compounded it by being dumb.

Still more on Alleva to me, and ftr I have zero problem with Wade 'playing the recruiting game' because that's what it takes to win :dunno;

Again, let’s base our opinion on the facts. Alleva didn’t “invite” the NCAA. The NCAA requested they be present.

I don’t agree but I can respect that take.

I think Alleva wanted to rightfully show institutional control. After Wade lied to him late in 18’ about not being involved with Dawkins outside of the Kobrivca convo, Wade deserved to be suspended until he cleared the air.

I don’t either. But you can’t get caught playing the game in the blatant manner Wade did. He was careless

the NCAA is a pretty shady group, but I think they'd be hard pressed to find anything major here without being able to show money actually changed hands.

I really hope you're right. Thanks for having an adult conversation about it. Tough to find with such an emotional topic.

Fair, but again Alleva also has the right to tell them to piss off (which he should have done), they have a job to do, but it's not Alleva's job to make it easier.

Agreed, and I assume he's learned from it and won't make the same mistake again
