he's going to look great in the direct snap, run and/or throw play, or the read option/throw.

He'll be listed as a WR before his days are over at LSU and he'll be used much like Harvin. Some direct snaps, some runs and some passes in space.

You don't know if he can even catch? I saw him trying to field balls for place holding, and he could hardly catch any of them. Have you even seen him play receiver? We know he can run and throw. We we think he will be a great receiver, I don't know. Takes a lot more to be a receiver than being nifty. I agree with the Harvin thing, since screens are realatively easy to catch. But, who knows for sure. Maybe that's one of the reasons why he is staying at QB right now, because he can't catch.

Russell was recruited out of high school as a #1 QB not as an ATH.

Russell Shepard

Dual-threat quarterback
Houston (TX) Cypress Ridge

Ht: 6-foot-1 (Events)
Wt: 179 lbs
Forty: 4.4 secs
Class: 2009 (High School

He's also still likely growing, he's only 18 after all, and entering one of the best S&C programs in all of CFB. It's not inconceivable to think that he's going to grow 2 more inches in height and gain 25 or 30 pounds in the next few years.

Exactly, and CRISP route running and being able to create space between yourself and the DB is key to being a good WR. It's not just about catching the ball. He has experience at none of these things. Not saying he couldn't develop those skills, but that's not why he was brought to LSU.

rivals listed him at QB (and he was a running QB in high school), but he's really an ATH

a. who was the last LSU player to gain 2 inches while at LSU? usually guys lose an inch from their rivals' height

b. 25-30 lbs? why? so he can go Early/KW and lose his burst and speed? 6-0, 200 is fine for him

i love shep, but it's seriously doubtful that he'll ever be a real quarterback for LSU

he's apparently not going to redshirt, so he's got 4 years to play (i'm hoping he never gets hurt seriously)

JJ will almost certainly start 3 years

then 3 yeas from now, shep will have 1 year to start and garrett will have 3 years of development at QB, as a real QB. add in the fact that shep is really raw and has a horrible throwing motion, and that he'll be getting reps at gimmick reps early, and i i just don't see how he can keep up with garrett in terms of QB prepatation

RS will get his shot at playing QB. In 2009, he'll get snaps in the Wild Tiger, and I'm sure Crowton will have him on the field for a few plays elsewhere.

In the long run, RS's future at QB will depend on his ability to a) read defenses and b) improve his passing skills.

He will get his shot, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Chris Garrett as LSU's #1 QB 2-3 years from now.

False -- He will play a form of QB, Slot, Wild Tiger at LSU.

how much time will he get to improve in these areas when he's practicing as an option QB and slot WR?

remember garrett is a pure QB prospect who will likely redshirt and who will get practice at QB alone

plus, JJ/JL each have 3 years of eligibility left. if JJ becomes a total badass and leaves in 2 years, JL will likely start in 3 years as a RS Sr (if he doesn't transfer and goes the flynn route)

it's just going to be hard for shep

I think RS will be used all over the field. Using him primarily as a WR won't get the most out of his talents. I don't see him being in the mix very much at QB, thou I do think they will have some packages for him. But ultimately before its over he will be a Percy Harvin type player.

Sfp - Call it what yoy will, but if you don't think RS will line up and run the "Wild X" next year, then stay tuned.

RS will get a shot to play QB, but I don't know that he will ever be the starter. That's what I said earlier.

i think his primary talent is his speed and running ability, so whichever position gets him in the open field is a good position for him, imho

i hope we do run it, but we just haven't run it yet for some reason. the comment has nothing to do with shep, i just don't get why we haven't jumped on the wild-x bandwagon (esp with our athletes)

Agreed, but he has shown to have good arm strength and accuracy. I think he will be in the mix at Qb but not as a starter. I think he be used more as a change of pace. As long as we have a couple of good pure QB's on the roster to use him at QB would be a waste IMO. When his talents can be better used somewhere else. Of course he does have that certain "it" quality and great leadership that you want from a QB. So maybe he will just grab the QB position and never let go of it. Either way LSU will be better no matter where he ends up. He just seems to have them certain leadership qualities that don't come along everyday.
