Hey Project, any chance in your estimation that either Skenes or Crews goes 4th to the Rangers? Possibly Langford?

There is definitely a non-zero chance.

But it would pretty much require the Pirates to take Clark or Jenkins. The Nats like star power. The Tigers like SEC guys.

Not his name.

Hasn't he been at LSU 4 years now? You should know how to spell his name.

You mean Burrow

Zac Taylor isnt the reason the Bengals are winning and they are still kinda cheap

Reynolds seems to be more of a CF than Langford to me, but what do I know.

Agreed but this year he has only played 10 games at center. That tells me they were starting the process for Crews to be in center next year at some point. Maybe if they take Langford they cancel those plans and have him at center and Langford in left.

If a scout told you the Pirates are going to take a specific guy in the draft based on what they're spending on players in the Dominican Republic, either he's a fricking moron or he knows he was talking to morons.

Dude, calm the frick down. He was just talking hypotheticals with us and some other prospects to keep an eye on. That man has been in the game for forty years and has forgotten more than you'll ever know. He was also sitting with Skip for a good while.

If the Pirates draft him and he refuses to sign, he comes back to LSU.

This has nothing to do with how the draft is handled.

Why do people keep repeating this like it bears any relevance?

I'll bite. Yes they will spend their full draft allotment and likely over, but they will be doing so because they need to draft as many "higher caliber" players as possible vs more of a sure thing in crews because they don't spend FA money and are cheap so they need a volume of "good" players.

Also could be a negotiating tactic

So you're saying he knew he was talking to morons.

I mean, if I'm a Pirates fan that follows the draft, I'm going to look at the cumulative draft haul over one specific guy because that's why you would take Clark instead of Crews, to improve the overall haul.

But imagine being a Pirates fan

This is torture enough without having to imagine passing on generational CF talent

How many people in this thread besides you and me know their highest FA contract ever is Ivan Nova?

You put more thought into your post than everyone calling the Pirates cheap has collectively.

I kind of want a reason to root for the Pirates, but if they’re trying to frick him on money, then frick them.

very true, look at 1.1 history from 1990 to 2012, basically a 50% chance you get a perennial all-star or better...all the more reason you don't pass on generational talent, even for a small market team, because that player can fetch you multiple top 100 prospects in a trade before they are a FA.

Chipper
ARod
Erstad
Hamilton
AGon
Mauer
Upton
Price
Strasburg
Harper
Cole
Correa

eta: this is a purely objective point of view. Subjectively, please don't let either of my favorite LSU tigers of all time go to that shite franchise that the Reds have to play multiple times a year.

Also outside of the baseball franchise's financial decisions, pittsburgh is a cool town

Well, the guy saying a scout told him the Pirates would take Max Clark to use draft pool in the IFA market assured that won't happen.

Whoever drafts Crews needs to draft Tommy next year for protection and a future .700 BA when Crews is on base.

Who knows how it shakes out. Pirates twitter has been pretty high on Crews all year. The news dropped he wasn’t interested in taking underslot value. I don’t know what he’s asking for, could be overlot. I don’t know how Pirates scouts are evaluating him, but Pirates twitter definitely want them to draft Crews. I think that’s still likely.

Pirates did make a surprise #1 pick in 2021 taking Henry David at #1 who was a college senior catcher who had no eligibility and agreed to underlot deal to go #1. Pirates also desperately needed catching at the time so they reached on him for underslot. Pirates then drafted some high school kids who demanded a high number to sign like Bubba Chandler who was a two sport star and was signed to play QB at Clemson.

Maybe Pirates want to employ a similar strategy and save money at #1 to then offer big contracts to kids on the fence similar to the Nick Castelanos example above. Pirates definitely will be spending all their money, I just don’t know what their strategy will be this year.I hope they draft Crews at full slot.
