both.
how is it better for the program?

There's no way to know that. They certainly wouldn't have put Tech in over LSU if those two didn't play in 07, nor Georgia. USC maybe, but it would have come down between USC and LSU to get the 2nd spot in the game.

There is no "they." It would have been the BCS formula.

Why not? It's not very far and it would give us a little exposure in that area. And they're giving us a 3 for 2, which is pretty good. Also, it will allow us to play another game on turf, which could only help if we wound up playing in the SECCG and/or Sugar Bowl those years. And I think Houston is likely to have a better program than a lot of us think by then.
Just because we don't have to. I don't like playing teams on their field that are not in a BCS conference......nothing good can happen (except maybe recruiting and for the local fans) in terms of positioning for that season. If we win, we were supposed to win, if they just so happen to have a Brett Farve that year and FSU is coming to Hattiesburg...... know what I mean?

I'd be willing to bet we'll be getting a cut of the gate at Reliant

If I remember correctly (and maybe I don't) Tech was ahead of us in the standings BEFORE the last regular season weekend miracles occurred. If they were ahead of us in spite of the drubbing we put on them, it stands to reason that they'd be ahead of us if, instead of playing each other, they'd lost to someone else and we played a cupcake.
UF was very close to getting edged by UT in the final BCS. The fact that Miami was on their schedule...not a great team certainly, but no cupcake, definitely helped them.

Oh, no doubt. That'll be more like a neutral site game than an away game.

Sure there is. Virginia Tech schedules a cupcake and goes 12-1, LSU schedules a cupcake and stays 11-2, Virginia Tech vs Ohio State in the lamest BCSNC ever.

I'd actually make one or two of those trips....been wanting to check out reliant.
Overall this is a solid move and also a little frick you to Tulane for signing that contract with Bama.

Completely forgot to mention FSU as well. I think they definitely get left out if they had replaced those two with cupcake opponents.
On the flip side, if LSU had been in UF's position this season, I don't think there would have been any way we would have gone to the title game over UT with our lame OOC schedule.

I don't mind scheduling home and homes...if you are a NC contender or wish to become on you have to play on the road sometime...
As far as Houston and TCU go...I look a little differently on them when it comes to these non-BCS teams...they were members of the SWC, if that league hadn't folded and the BCS came along, the SWC would have been a BCS conference league...

Not trying to be a dick or anything, but how is everyone so sure that this is a recruiting tactic? Is that speculation or fact?

Posted on 3/13/09 at 7:11 pm to Obi-Wan Tiger
I'm glad we're really hanging our balls out there.

This is GREAT news & I hope it is true!! Not just because I live in Houston, but this is an LSU hotbed for talent, and every year, more & more LSU grads are moving here. Houston is becoming West Louisiana!!

Posted on 3/13/09 at 7:19 pm to Tiger in Texas
Screw the NCAA Cougars, lets schedule the NFL Texans! We can take 'em!!!

It would have been close. But sure, it would have been nice if we had played the "Arkansas" of the Big 12, like Texas A&M
LSU
--Florida (13-1) -- #1
--Alabama (12-2) -- #4
--Georgia (10-3) -- #16
--Mississippi (9-4) -- #25
--South Carolina (7-6)
--Auburn (5-7)
--Arkansas (5-7)
--Mississippi State (4-8)
--Troy (8-5)
--Appalachian State (non-IA)
--Tulane (2-10)
--North Texas (1-11)
TEXAS
--Oklahoma (12-2) -- #2
--Texas Tech (11-2) -- #8
--Oklahoma State (9-4) -- #13
--Missouri (10-4) -- #25
--Kansas (8-5)
--Colorado (5-7)
--Baylor (4-8)
--Texas A&M (4-8)
--Arkansas (5-7) -- SEC
--Rice (10-3)
--Florida Atlantic (7-6)
--UTEP (5-7)

quote:Mixed feelings. LSU has nothing to gain by beating UH, and a lot to lose if they win a game in the series. But on the other hand, LSU gets lots of "presence" in Houston over five years, and that can only be a plus positive in the recruiting wars in that very fertile football state and city.
