One day I would like to wake up, get on TD and see that fans understand you DO NOT need a 4.5 40 RUNNING QB in order to run the RPO. The R in RPO gives the QB the ability to hand off to the running back. If he (QB) reads the defense and sees they are playing the RUN, he can withdraw the hand off and Pass the ball. No running the QB is required.

You're right. The fans need an olympic speed track star who can also throw 80 yard bombs.

People confuse RPO with zone read option.

The terminology confuses people because there have been “run pass options” for decades, where you maybe roll the QB out and he reads one receiver and if he’s not open then he runs(especially in goal line situations. However yes, RPO means exactly what you said, the o line blocks run and the QB reads one receiver to throw to, if not hands it off. Also as above posted, people confuse it with the zone read, where the QB can hand it to the RB or keep it himself, which is not an RPO.

Also, it could be argued that a mobile QB is better for RPO’s because the defense has to be weary of the zone read and therefore has to commit another defender to keeping an eye on the QB keeping the ball on a designed zone read.

I agree with that. IMO, what made Joey B so great was the fact he “could” run. Wasn’t a blazer like Daniels but was more mobile than Brennan. Teams didn’t respect it enough even as the year progressed. May the best man win. Geaux Tigers

Duh… anybody who doesn’t understand that shouldn’t be commenting on what the RPO is (here’s looking at the OP). It’s super dangerous when you have a qb who the defense isn’t sure will run, hand off, or pass on any given play/formation. They want to run the zone read well.

Some poor guy has nothing because Joey B has it all. But being mobile isn’t the end all be all, it’s just an added benefit if we’re talking about the perfect QB.

If he can pass a mobile QB is better for every play.

Well I never said it wasn’t beneficial to have a running QB. I only stated that you did not need one. Reading comprehension isn’t everyone’s strong suit tho.

The term gained popularity in recent years and has confused many.

It would be simpler to say the quarterback is given the liberty to audible from pass to run or from run to pass. Simple as that.

Yeah we saw that in 2019 and we get it. People think you need a QB who runs 50 yards a game to be successful.
