They are our rival by definition. Competing against each other for the same goal.

I remember we played the aTm annually from the 60s thru the 90s, it seemed. Gave us our only loss in 69, I believe on a "hail mary" when Norm Hodgkins (sp) went for the interception instead of the knock down...anyway, I digress...my father told me, one time, that we used to play Arky all the time at State Fair Stadium (the Independence Bowl now), especially in the 50s, I thought. Just my recollection....

The only loss we had in 1969 was to Ole Miss. The "Hail Mary" pass was in 1970, and it was Paul Lyons who went for the interception. He went on to play QB, and played it pretty well.

I've got bad news; technically, any team we play every single year is a 'rival'.

For strange some reason LSU fans seem terrified of this word.

Ole Miss and Auburn were bigger games over time as well as Bama

This "rival" concept is so overplayed on these boards.

it is. trust me, I have plenty of swine friends, and the boot means so much more to Arkansas. I've been to most SEC venues a couple of times, and it's without question the most hostile atmosphere towards LSU fans. there are lots of mouthbreathers who didn't attend UA that walk the campus on gamedays, and they'll let you know what they think about LSU

with that said, Fayetteville is an AWESOME trip that I recommend everyone to take at least once. It's a very happening city

As one of the original SEC members, your rivals are Ole Miss and Auburn...

Arkansas rival will now be Missouri and they can build on that

We dropped A&M in the mid 90's because we sucked. Then played Arkansas 20 straight years when they joined the SEC, without playing A&M

No we didn't drop it because "we sucked". We dropped it because the SEC expanded and we were forced to scramble our schedule and play Mississippi State very early in the season after the SEC went to 8 games. LSU like many other SEC school had to adjust its' schedule and there was only 1 game remaining with A&M so LSU dropped the series. In addition, A&M had chosen to go to the Big12 with their "daddy" UT even though they had an invitation to join the SEC. They chose to play lapdog to UT and that was the end of it.

Any time Arkansas beats someone, they are all of a sudden rivals

I didn't realize we used to regularly play the Piggies way back in the old days...in Shreveport.

We expanded in 1992 and dropped A&M after the 95 season.....after they had won 5 straight. LSU needed to soften it's schedule. If A&M had been Rice we would have never cancelled the contract.

Not this topic again. I guess the horse is dead, but y'all aren't through beating it yet.

Arkansas' rival is TEXAS! Not LSU or any other SEC team.

Are we glad we beat you this year? Yes, because the other option just isn't satisfying. However, we are happy when we beat Ole Miss or any other team...just like you are happy when LSU wins.

Were we excited to take the silly 'Boot' home? Yes. But, if you are true to yourself you will admit that the
victory had significant meaning for the 18-22 year olds that finally won an SEC game after 17 tries. This year the 'Boot' was a symbol of getting that monkey off our backs. It had less to do with LSU the opponent, and more to do with the overdue feeling of winning. Especially after being so close, so many times.

If you're an LSU fan, and you have friends who are Razorback fans, don't be surprised that they take extra happiness in having "bragging" rights for a year. I'm in the military and was stationed in LA for 16 years. I'm sure some of my LSU friends think that the Tigers are the biggest game of the year for Arkansas. I know I feel that Arkansas is VERY important to them...because they want the "bragging" rights when we get together.

In the end, LSU is not the UNIVERSAL rival of the Arkansas Razorbacks. It is still Texas. Heck, on the Woopig website, even the "Official don't really care that much about Texas" thread turned into a rival hate thread by the 4th post. That thread was supposed to be the counter to the Official Hate Texas thread...didn't work.

LSU and A&M did not play each other from 1976-85.

If Missouri is ever added to the west, they should weld that state to the top and award it to the overall winner in games between LSU, Ark, and Mizzou. Call it The Stripper Boot.

That's part of the reason, but not all of it. A&M wasn't the only rivalry that was put on the shelf in the 90s. The home and home contract to play Tulane wasn't renewed after it ran out, as well, only to be briefly revived a few years ago and die again.

It wasn't just the game against a tough team that made LSU get rid of the A&M series. If that were the case, they might have kept Tulame around as an easy yearly win. It was the loss of home game revenue after the SEC expanded. Losing one game a year, every year, no matter how good the team you are playing, is too much to swallow. The athletic dept made a decision to maximize revenue, and it was one of the few Joe Dean ever made that was any good.

As for Arkansas, there are at least 4 teams I would put ahead of them. Now that we don't play them in the last game, they could melt that most redneck fabulous of all trophies and no one in Louisiana would miss it.

Despite the piggy protest earlier in the thread, I know my Arkansas family members (there are only 5), and people I go to church with care a great deal more about that game than I do. I never talk trash when we win, but I don't have to. They will inevitably bring it up every time I see them.

The best way to sum up the difference in the fanbases would be to re-watch the speech by the former Hog player who designed the trophy (shocker) before this year's game. He certainly gave a damn, and it was pretty clear that it wasn't just because he designed it, or because of a few losses.
