He even invented the term "alley-oop"
quote:

Tittle coined the term “alley-oop” for a play in which his 6-foot-3 receiver R.C. Owens would plant himself in the end zone and jump as high as he could, and Tittle would throw him a high pass. The term would later become associated with basketball, but Tittle came up with it first.

all the young'ns will be coming in here talking trash about "modern" athletes, Tittle, Cannon, and others like him, before and after in that era were MEN, grown fricking badass MEN!!

ETA: met him at a tailgate when he came back for some honor circa mid 90s, he was wearing his NFL HoF jacket, we talked for a bit, he was so humble and nice, he said he didn't really think he'd even be remembered for his time at LSU, I told him he'd never be forgotten at LSU, nice chat with a great Tiger

i totally agree. hell, cannon ran a 9.6 100yd dash anyway, may have ran faster than that. this is all before advancement in nutrition and resistance training. people conveniently leave out how far nutrition and year round training has helped the modern athlete.

kids still aren't any faster nowadays. i the early 90's i remember running against nylo silvan in the 100m dash and going wtf. dude ran around a 10.4, maybe a shade below it. that's fast as hell for a high schooler. i don't remember what warrick dunn's 60m indoor time was, but it was better than mine, lol.

quote from a friend:
Thanks!
I was a Freshman at LSU for Tittle's last year (1947). Unfortunately, he had very poor receivers......LSU was rated #2 or #3 in the USA after 2 games but they barely made a winning season.
Fortunately, they beat Tulane, who was THE arch rival in those days. In that time of shaved-head Freshmen, tradition had it that if Tulane won, Freshmen got another bald-head haircut!

I still remember beautiful passes from Tittle that were either bobbled or missed altogether. Rumor was that Coach Bernie Moore [who was primarily a track coach]
praised Tittle so enthusiastically that the team reacted against him. Looks like Moore knew quality when he saw it!
End of an era!

So true but hopefully that will change soon with Faneca and Mawae being inducted.

lsu was honoring vets returning from the war by giving them back their starting jobs, not necessarily the the best athletes at the time, but, understandably, the right thing to do at the time, we were considered a favorite to be the nc going into his last year

I picked him up a couple of times from dfw airport when he would stay at his place on Caddo Lake. He was one of the good ones. He will be missed.

It breaks my heart that he died without his name on the stadium. I’ve never understood why he isn’t up there.

GOAT! When I first got to Shreveport late one night from San Antonio, i was riding around Cross Lake and got lost. In what seemed like in the middle of no where i stopped at a little country store. I asked directions, and as I was walking out I noticed a Little infamous framed signature picture of Y.A kneeling on the ground bleeding from his head. I back upped and said where did you get that autographed picture of Y.A., he said o' you know who Y.A. is? I was in my head going is there someone who doesn't...he said he was good friends with Y.A. , well after at least an hour of talking, he said YA is coming in next weekend from S.F., would you like to meet him? Honestly I did not believe him, so I grinned and said sure, knowing I would never get that call. Well, I did get that call, had breakfast that Friday morning with Y.A., BILLY Williams and his rother, and son. Such a humble man, was asking me questions about football, etc, like he really valued my opinion. Took pictures with him and he auto graphed my ball which I still cherish to the day.
Rest in peace to a great Tiger and even more a great human being!
