and didn't do a lick of recruiting when he was at LSU
Yah..he didn't recruit anybody
Arnsparger Recruits:
Eric Andolsek
Wendell Davis
Sam Martin
Tony Moss
Oliver Lawrence
Tommy Hodson
Eric Hill
Kenny Davidson
Greg Jackson
Clint James
Victor Jones
Robert Packnett
Ruffin Rodrigue
Ronnie Haliburton
Harvey Williams
Willie Williams
Eddie Fuller
David Browndyke
Arnsparger Recruits but signed under Archer:
Corey Raymond

Stoval 22-21-2
Arnsparger 26-8-2
He did more with Stovall's recruits than Stovall did.

Remember my Dad taking me to a few games. That may have been after he left but I was young so don't quite recall. I remember that Ohio State LSU game at TS in 86 though. Remember seeing it on TV.
RIP Coach

Too bad he left us for UF. He had us on the verge of great things. RIP Coach.

quote:This statement is misleading at best. And you make the Spurrier hire sound like it came immediately after Arnsparger became AD. There was a 3 year gap.
He was great for LSU; however, he's also the guy that recommended against giving Steve Spurrier an interview but gave Spurrier the head coaching job at Florida when he became AD there.
This thread from 2010 captures events nicely.
From the poster RedStickCock:
quote:
Spurrier was not yet coach at Duke. He had been an assistant coach at Duke and head coach in the United States Football League. So, while he was a promising coach, he was not quite the slam dunk hire that it seems in retrospect. Also, Arnsparger was not yet A.D. at Florida. He didn't immediately take the job, and LSU's chancellor, Jim Wharton, wanted Arnsparger to become LSU's A.D. Wharton had run off Bob Brodhead because Arnsparger didn't like him. So, because Arnsparger had recommended Archer for the LSU job, Wharton pushed for Archer in hopes it would convince Arnsparger to stay as A.D. Spurrier interviewed, then withdrew his name from consideration when he figured out that he wasn't being seriously considered.

I remember when he came to an alumni function in Houston. There was an auction for an autographed football signed by him. When the bid ended at $50 he interrupted the auctioneer, went over and grabbed the football and said he wasn't going to let it go for $50. He told the auctioneer to restart the bidding and it ended up going for around $200.
RIP Coach Arnsparger!

quote:Not true at all. My only quibble with Coach Arnsparger is that he didn't seem to take bowl games seriously. Or perhaps he was just unlucky. We got whipped by two really good Nebraska teams in the Sugar Bowl, which is forgivable. But the Liberty Bowl against Baylor was just awful and showed a complete lack of focus and preparation.
Arnsparger was great coach but he didn't recruit.
But criticisms of the man should not be the focus of today.

If he stays one more season (1987) LSU has a legit chance at a NC. Went 10-1-1 with Archer and finished ranked #5...Arnsparger would have done better than that. The '87 squad was LOADED

Why couldnt lsu have fired whoever was the AD at the time and promote him from football coach to AD. Was Florida his alma mater?

Right you are Tigah
Remember watching that first game of 84 @ UF ended 24-24T I believe, they still had the horrible hard turf field.
The next week was I think the AZ Cats in TS with Larry Smith their coach and a pretty good team I believe; my dad and I went and Tiger Cats came away with a thrilling 27-26W on E Hill fumble recovery on last play!
Remember thinking hey the excitement is back in TS!
