Nola.com says he is at .491 right now in SEC games
That's overall. he's actually batting .531 in SEC games, pretty crazy

Does Rhymes have a realistic shot at breaking that .410 mark set by Russ Johnson? Too early?
Since we're at the halfway mark of the regular season, let's say he gets the same amount of ABs for the second half of the season as the first. He would need to get 36 hits in his next 108 ABs, a .333 batting average, to break the record. That's definitely attainable considering how well he's been hitting the ball.

Wow.
And I see a lot of teams pitching around him, so those ABs may go down.

2 things....
One post said let's see how he does after more SEC play...He is batting .531 in SEC so that normal assumption goes out of the window. Mind you he hasn't faced Florida or SC pitching but I think he'll fare just fine.
Second if his ABs go down that helps with his chances of having a higher BA.
I see him breaking the BA record but not the hits record.

I can see him breaking both if we make a deep run in the postseason.

as i said it will be hard to break that hits record. That 1997 team not only won the CWS, they also made the finals of the SECT and also had to come out of the loser's bracket in the regional. They played an additional 14 games to the 56 regular season games. for Rhymes to have a shot, he's not only going to have to keep up a tremendous pace, he'll also need LSU to basically make it to Omaha.
Not to mention, that 1997 team produced infinitely more offense, which resulted in more at bats for Larson. Larson had 289 AB in 69 GP. Rhymes has 108 in 28 GP. That works out to 4.18 Ab/G for Larson and 3.85 for Rhymes. As far as the pace is concerned, Rhymes, without the postseason is on pace for 108 hits. Larson did "only" have 110 in 1997, but you have to think Rhymes is going to cool off eventually. It's just baseball. In a conference like the SEC, it's unrealistic to bat .500 the entire season.
Not saying it's impossible but unlikely. I think he can certainly bat .400 which would be a tremendous accomplishment. I'll be rooting for him nonetheless. To think a kid that couldn't quite find a spot on the baseball team out of high school and always dreamed of being a Tiger, goes to CC, and then comes to his dream school to have a season like this his last year. Good for him.

It's waaaay too early...so early that I'd say there is a high probability that he will not.
You're being irrational.
Barring some freak injury, it's highly unlikely that Rhymes will fall short of the record. Just do the numbers. After 9 games, Rhymes currently leads the SEC in hitting at .531 (17-32).
Amazingly, this is done while LSU still ranks dead last in the conference in runs scored, with only 32 runs in 9 games.

Thank God he came back LSU so Javi could develop him into the .500 hitter he is today...

Even more impressive is Rhymes is doing this when bats were changed compared to previous record?
Posted on 4/27/12 at 11:01 pm to deuce985
Don't see how that has much to do with the hits/average record. If he was on pace to break the HR record, okay...sure, but not hits/avg.

Does he still have only 7 strike outs?
Because 7 Ks out of 147 at bats is insane.

Only 12 walks as well.
Odds are when the dude steps up to the plate, he's going to put the ball in play.
