Only thing I can think of is that LSU didn't want a direct correlation due to the subject matter. The book was originally about a UNC player, but they didn't want anything to do with the movie.
Kind of like The Program is about a fictional school, but they play real teams in the movie.

I didn't think the school was ever painted in a negative light? It was more about his personal struggles. Why wouldn't they want to be associated? Unless I'm missing something.

yeah and in the book Gavin killed himself and tried to kill Babs, so prob better they went a different direction
but I still don't understand why they do everything to make it just like LSU without using the name LSU when they use the real names of all the other teams and organizations. I'm sure there is a good explanation, I'd just be curious to know what exactly it is.

Thunder Road, movie that just won SXSW, the lead is an LSU grad. Lots of LSU gear. At least 1 LSU joke.

It's been years since I read it, but the book is much darker when it comes to the personal struggles. Spolier Alert: Grey Ghost ends up offing himself.
Maybe UNC and LSU were uncomfortable with that. They wouldn't have known how Hollywood would adapt it either. Also from LSU's perspective, Billy Cannon's legal troubles had only occurred a few years before, so maybe they were being extra image-conscious.
Of course, I could be totally wrong about that reasoning.
ETA: 19 beat me to the spolier, so I don't feel as bad.

The scene where the fat chick is hit with the burrito was filmed where zippys is now on Perkins. It was an old gas station they fixed up for the movie and then it turned into Zippys.

Stephen stills of Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, stills Nash (and sometimes young) released his first solo album in the early 70’s and on the back cover he’s wearing an LSU Jersey #41 while riding a horse

I also read where the first football game they filmed had actual snow showers but they declined to use any film from that game and filmed the next week as well because they thought people would think it was "unrealistic" for Louisiana weather even though ironically enough it really did snow during that first game.

Just watched both Maine Justice skits.
I haven't laughed that hard at an SNL skit in ages.

Tron. When Jeff Bridges is trying to hack into the MCP right before gets zapped by the laser, the code he enters is LSU-123.

Not quite, it was on Perkins right by Zippys though. Zippys has been there for like 15 years.

Was there. Agree with your dad.
