HappyKuykendahl said... (original post) Admittedly, I thought LSU fans were just being sour about us taking Chavis, but they were right about his recruiting impact being very minimal. However, they were completely wrong about "3rd and Chavis". His defense has sucked on 1st, 2nd, and sometimes even 4th down, not just 3rd.

DANNY ETLING threw for 324 yards last year. that should tell you all you need to know about chavis and his "defense"

His history suggests that he can put together a great 4 3 defense so long as he has elite talent and depth at defensive tackle. Beyond that he is pretty weak.

He does not even pretend to recruit. I remember when he 1st got here. He was well thought of but even then the Tennessee fans were joking about "It's third and Chavis". We came to see what they meant.

Aranda admitted to playing a 16 defense with success at Wisconsin. I think we have the right guy. LOL

Of course we were saying glad he's yours, now we know we'll win annually. Probably the best steal to ever happen to LSU. Yep they "stole" Chavis LMAO.

Agreed.

If he has the players, then yeah, he can put together a decent D, although I will agree with that terrible "3rd and Chavis." All we had to do was knock Yeldon down but no........

Anyway, if you don't have the players, don't expect him to go out shopping for what he needs. I never understood that about the guy. It's just odd.

Exactly. He doesn't have an Eric Reid, a Mathieu, Mingo, Montgomery, etc..... his defensive plan falls apart.

LSU Total Defense Under Chavis (ESPN)

2009 - 30
2010 - 13
2011 - 5
2012 - 9
2013 - 15
2014 - 8

Aggies Total Defense Under Chavis (ESPN)

2015 - 41
2016 - 89(!)

Hmmm...wonder why he was more successful here than Aggieland....It couldn't be the plethora of NFL Pro-Bowl type talent that he had on the field constantly but didn't recruit, could it?

Another factor may be that Les Miles runs a lot of clock and helps keep stats down

It has its negatives and positives

I just know Chavis was really bad in 13 (that UGA game was nuts) and still hate we lost to ND in the bowl game his last season but that was on both sides of the ball. We had big scoring plays but no sustained offensive success and they had so many players out for that game. Lol. Outside of LF return for a td, another big run and one of our receivers scoring on a broken coverage plsy we didn't do much on offense. We did get robbed of a TD by the refs though before half.

Sorry for rambling lol it's late and I'm delirious.

Our defensive recruiting, especially at linebacker is so much bettter overall now!

Not that I am a Chavis fan, but no one can put together a great defense without elite talent. That's why his decision to leave LSU for A&M was so stupid. He knew he couldn't make himself recruit, so how did he think he was going to get elite talent, by osmosis or something?

Anyway, he's probably done after this season when Kevin Sumlin gets fired. However, I really don't want to see Sumlin go because you never know, they could hire a great recruiter to take his place.

His decision to leave LSU was far from stupid. In fact, it has worked out exactly as he feared and hoped. He feared that LSU would fire Miles in the next year. He wanted a guaranteed three or four year deal that would see him to retirement. LSU would not give it to him. A&M did. He is sailing off into retirement with the money he hoped for. Had he stayed at LSU, where would he be? Working for Frank Wilson for $300,000?

As I said, far from stupid.

"The day of LSU's 2014 Music City Bowl loss to Notre Dame, Chavis turned down a 3-year 5.4 million dollar[7] offer from Les Miles. That same day, it was reported that Chavis had accepted an offer from Texas A&M to take their then vacant defensive coordinator position.[8] He officially signed a contract to accept the position on February 12, 2015, which guaranteed him $1.5 million in 2015, $1.55 million in 2016 and $1.6 million in 2017"

He turned down more money to leave for less. And he left like a little bitch, recruiting for A&M while on our dime. The man is a gigantic, fat piece of runny shite. I'm glad he's away from LSU.

You're missing Chavis' point, shifty. The LSU money was not guaranteed. The A&M money WAS. If Miles and Chavis were fired - and Miles, in fact, was - then Chavis would have walked away with nothing.

The actual result of his contract with LSU would have been about half what he's getting from A&M.

Auburn stealing Steele was big too.

Auburn got us Aranda and also got rid of Les by winning the buyout bowl, which in turn got us Canada. We should mail Gus a ring if we win the SEC this year.
