How and why did the peach bowl work itself into the playoff. I always remember that peach bowl being a second tier bowl, and us being disappointed to be there.

it started out 2nd their, and slowly gained in stature.

then when the new CFP came around and bowls could just shell out enough $ to be in the mix, they pounced.

I’m not sure when this status came about but by the end of the BCS it was the highest paying non BCS bowl even more so than the cotton bowl. It’s also in the biggest city in the Deep South which is obviously a college football crazy region. It had SEC ties and was able score some good matchups in its final years like heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel in a thriller with an upstart Duke and the infamous LSU Clemson game which was the highest two ranked teams in the peach bowl ever.

it helped that lots of other bowls made their selections early.

like ‘05 all the “name brand” bowls selected teams before the SEC CG.
so we fell to the Peach.

but Oeach ended up with 2 top 10 teams and was only game on that night.

Inaugural Peach Bowl was LSU versus FSU. Guess who won.

therein lies the answer about how it went from 2nd tier to CFP.

Alot of it was ties to the SEC. Match the 'rise' of the SEC to the Peach's payout. SEC took big jump in stature in '92. Peach Bowl in '97. I'm betting they track each other.

College football hall of fame is practically next door to the stadium. $$$$ talks.

The construction of the new stadium helped. It had been in the works before the CFP began. No different than Jerry World saving the Cotton Bowl game and making it a major player again. The Cotton Bowl went from being one of the five major bowls to becoming a second-tier bowl to being included in the CFP rotation.

Being in a $1bn+ stadium and a travel hub catapulted it, logically.

yall remember when they dropped the Peach and were calling it just the Chick Fil A bowl? Kinda like Citrus was called Capital One Bowl for a while.
Always thought that was stupid.
If your bowl has a bit of brand name value, even something as lowly as the Gator or Independence, keep the traditional name and just throw the sponsor name on the tail end "brought to you by".
In 20 years when popeyes has run all the cfa's out of business people will look back at that 'Chick Fil A bowl' and be like "huh? whats chick fil a?"

I know we always thought of it as a 2nd tier bowl but in reality it was a major non-BCS bowl. It always had the best non-BCS ACC team so it was a big deal for them. It felt 2nd tier for us because it was the 4th best non-BCS SEC team, which when you factor in that we typically had 2 BCS teams it felt lower then it actually was.

ETA: and changing the name back to peach bowl was a NY6 requirement. You couldn’t have just the sponsor’s name as the bowl game.
