I'm sure his has been beat to death, but did anyone else find the play calling when we were down by 2, with the ball on the 32 or so with 9 minutes left to be head scratching? We only needed like 5 yards to be in comfortable field goal range, and we passed 3 times, took a sack, and had to punt. It was almost like they didn't consider the fact that we only needed a field goal. I get that there were 9 minutes left, but I still expected us to run 3 times and pick up enough yards at a minimum to try a field goal with how the defense was playing. Thoughts?

Sounds like you need a coaching headset.

It was head scratching, and Canada realized his error because the first FG drive he ran twice and hit a swing pass to Guice that was open before for the first down.

Only play calling we should be talking about is Aranda letting the dogs loose. That QB was rattled in the second half.

You're stuck in Les Miles mode. That's exactly what he would have done.

I'm glad we're not doing that anymore.

If we had run 3 times and gained 4 yards, folks would have been screaming, "Just like Miles - too predictable."

There's just no pleasing some people.

maybe Canada trusted his senior QB to be smart and complete a pass, or not get sacked sitting back holding the ball for too long.

I am still very concerned with Canada's offense and play calling. I am most concerned that we are not a physical running team which is needed in the SEC. I suspect a lot of this has to do with playing 4 freshman on the OL, but his scheme is not impressive to me - inside run, jet sweep, long ball -- that's our scheme.

We are trying to be a physical running team.

But...

You answered your own question.

And to the OP, we were averaging about 2.4 runs a carry between the tackles. Canada passing with the ball at the 35 yard line was out of necessity.

That punt downed at the 2 yard line was the key to victory. Even though LSU had a short field before the punt, the field shifted after the punt and Auburn three and out, and the Tigers ended up with even better field position, and a FIRST DOWN

And the next series when we were in the same situation we didn't pass 3 times in a row and we kicked a field goal. Sounds like Canada learned quickly and adjusted.

Gary Danielson mentioned - and even mentioned it on the next drive when the play calling was different.

therein lies the answer to your question.

Playcalling would suggest they thought we needed more than 5yds to be in 'comfortable' range.

However, that was not the play selection. That was a 7 play drive:
Rush, 1yd
Rush, 4yd
pass, 5yd (3rd & 5)
rush, 7yd
rush, 0yd
scramble, 2yd
FG- 42 yd

honestly, I was worried about the 42yd FG. I wanted them to pass more and get more comfortable yardage. AU was betting we didn't want to risk an turnover and was stacking the line, but spread out because of the jet sweep.

The next FG to make it 23-27 was 3 rushes and a FG

ETA: not sure if I'm screwed up, or you are but either way I think the series you are referring to is the series prior to that where we punted. I'm referring to the one where we were down by two, and then went up by 1. Sorry for the confusion, if I am causing it.

Give the guts and glory to Aranda in the second half for great defensive calls

Makes sense. The way the D was playing, if it didn't work we had at least one more possession and probably two.
