Food for thought: if Henry doesn’t really shoot, why not have sky guard Winston, Taylor guard Mcquaid, and tre guard Henry?

Sure Henry has 6 inches on tee but Mcquaid would have him by 4 inches anyway if that were the matchup.

Also since Henry doesn’t shoot much, it’ll allow tre to break off and trap and get some steals.

My worry is that if Tre is guarding Winston, he won’t be able to get those trap steals he gets every game and if he guards Mcquaid, he’ll give up open 3’s when he tries to trap.

There is definitely a lot of flexibility to the gameplan. My worry would be Henry posting up Tre and forcing a double team which then will have us scrambling. Also Henry would be able to slash pretty well.

I think you would want to leave Henry and perhaps trap McQuaid and scramble to guard Winston and force Henry to make a decision

Thanks to Tyrus Thomas and Eric Maynor in back to back seasons the days of out-athleting Duke are gone. But I still love our guys vs everyone. The spirit of this team is off the charts. Just gotta stay out our own way sometimes which is normal for a young squad.

Nice write up. It seems like their team goes as Cassius goes. If I recall, he plays physical for a small guard. I'd love if Waters can pick up a couple cheap fouls on him and maybe draw a charge and get him in foul trouble.

I didn't give us a chance till I read this. THANKS! I was stuck in Izzo land and the reality is our big men should dominate underneath. If we can play close to even in guard play, we should win... because of what you point out... Our strength this year has been offensive boards and I think this sets up well to play to our strength... BRING ON DUKE

I’ll be there.

Not a huge LSU basketball fan, but as a UVA fan, I’m anti Duke, Tech and Sparty. I’ll be rooting for LSU, but more importantly, rooting hard against whoever LSU is playing.

It sure seemed like it took a while for them to commit to being athletic though.

LSUButt, do you think we see Waters or Smart try to deny Cassius the ball?

A couple teams have done the same with Waters and have had success doing so. It seems to me Michigan State would be somewhat lost if their offense couldn't flow through Cassius.

With only two guards to rely on, I wouldn't mind seeing us pressure them, speed the game up, and keep the ball out of Cassius's hands.

It seems like a lot of their production from throughout the year is out with injury. They are very thin at guard. If some of the Sparty forwards can't handle the ball, they will be very susceptible to turnovers in a press defense, especially if Winston gets in foul trouble.

Derrick Williams and Arizona blasting that Kyrie team in 2011 really made K go all in.

Absolutely. If Cassius isn't able to create then Michigan State can't flow. The problem is they run so many ball screens it's hard to constantly be perfect. LSU seems to fall asleep at some point every game. Michigan State in COUNTLESS games has been tied, behind, or very close with 5-6 minutes left in the game and their style just wears the other team down.

I think LSU is very big on playing their game. I don't think you can really change who Tremont Waters is. The guy likes to take chances, get weakside steals, and it's high risk/high reward. I think Smart/Mays may try to deny, but Waters will just play his game.

They say in March you win because of guards, and I'm actually shocked how thin MSU is at the guard position. I can't remember ever seeing such a highly ranked team with this little depth in their backcourt. McQuaid is considered maybe their best perimeter defender, and if that's the case, give me Smart vs McQuaid all day long. I think we MUST stay aggressive and attack.

If McQuaid or Winston get in foul trouble, it's virtually impossible for MSU to win because of their lack of depth (just my opinion).
