re: Pre-internet LSU fans - what would cause a rant meltdown in your time?

Cecil Collins' arrest

Was this worse than Jamarcus Russel having to split time with Marcus Randall. How about that season where Davey had to come in and save Josh Booty...but never earned the starting roll?

On the flip side, could you imagine the circle jerk following this?
BOOM!

BOOM!

"Pretty much the entire football decade of the 90's outside of 95-97, although the loss to ole miss in 1997 and throttling by notre dame would have caused quite the meltdown."
That Ole Miss loss after Beating the gators and Spurrier the week before. It would have insane on this site. Ole miss hit the tight end over the middle for 8 yds about 35 times that game!

The only two years Davey never started were '97 when he was redshirting and '98 when Herb Tyler was a SR. He started against Auburn and NT in '99, and against Tennessee and Florida in 2000 before getting hurt again. And of course he started nearly all of 2001.
Not sure what season you're talking about.

Dale Brown having Shaq, Jackson, Roberts, and Mo Williamson and winning exactly 1 NCAA tournament game would have gotten some run
This above quote got to me back in the day. Though technically they won 2 games (Villanova in 90 and BYU in 92), Shaq and CJ were the only "next level" talent on the team. Roberts was simply a fat, lazy, slackass drunk who loved be a terrible student. CJ's Tourette's seemed to benefit his individual play, but he never seemed to mesh with his teammates. I just don't think he had fully adapted to his illness during that time.
Shaq still had a lot of learning to do. As a junior in high school, he was not a top prospect. It was not until a good scolding from his dad during his senior year that he actually started trying to perform to his ability. That effort got him national attention, despite only having a 16 inch vertical jump (equivalent to standing on his tip-toes). Shaq was still just a baby the one year he played with CJ. He fouled out of 9 games that year and seemed content scoring points off rebounds rather than developing his offensive skills.
They weren't that terrible, considering they lost in the tournament to Georgia Tech that year by 3 pts - a team that made it to the Final Four. That Ga tech team also featured the national player of the year - Dennis Scott.
By Shaq's second season, CJ was gone and so was Stanley who was more committed to partying. Shaq's exposure to top athletes had helped him immensely. His 16 inch vertical in high school became a 42 inch vertical over the summer before his sophomore year.
That year LSU lost to Connecticut - who lost to the eventual national champion Duke. They didn't get beat by slouches.
During Shaq's final year, they lost to Bobby Knight's Indiana by 10 - who went on to the Final Four, eventually losing to national champion Duke.

Bobby Knight punching the scorers table and causing the refs to swallow their whistles in the 1987 elite eight game still infuriates me so IMO the meltdown would have been earth-shattering

The 31 point comeback by Kentucky would have been an EPIC in-game thread.

This really pissed me off in 1999:
Nov. 13 Houston L 7-20 Baton Rouge

I think the mods would be forced to relax the personal attack policy after this one. Lowest point for me as an LSU fan. This was at home too.

Jamie Howard. Or better yet the f***ing OC who kept calling passes. Nothing comes close.

Larry Foster incident.
Also, Shaun Alexander running all over the Tigers in Baton Rouge.

I was at that game as a student and couldn't believe what was going on. My buzz was wearing off and Kentucky just kept draining 3 after 3 and no one would guard them.

- Dinardo going for 2 against Georgia when the XP tied it
Don't think it would have been that bad and I don't blame Dinardo. Georgia was tearing us up on offense so we didn't want to go to OT. I don't think Jasper Sanks did anything other than what he did to LSU in this game.
In addition to the other mentioned:
I think there would have been a meltdown when we were at Alabama's 1 or 2 yard line with about 20 seconds left and we had several downs and Josh Booty decided to attempt to run the ball instead of throwing it to a wide open guy in the back of the endzone. Needless to say, he was stopped short and the game ended (even though we could have gotten at least 1 or 2 more plays off had he not ran) with an Alabama player laying on the field hurt.
Also, the Alabama 4th quarter comeback in Tiger Stadium either in 98. We were about to put them away and go up three scores, but a pass went right through Abraham Booty's hands. Alabama then goes to score a touchdown, recovers an onsides kick, and scores another touchdown to beat us in the final few minutes. And I believe two of Alabama's touchdown passes that night were on tipped balls. To top it off, Alabama fans were leaving because they thought they would lose, but started to come back in the stadium.
And finally, the only game Mississippi State has won in the last 20 or so in 1999 when the Mississippi State back crawled into the endzone on 4th and goal (before replay). He was clearly stopped short, but State was given the go-ahead touchdown and ended up winning.

After further thought...seriously, how chaotic would this place have been for the Howard INT game in 1994? There would have been Apple computers blowing up all over town...
Nothing else could even come close to this. Nothing.

I was yelling at howard so loud during that game when those pics were thrown that a neighbor (very timidly) crossed the street to ask my wife, who was working in the yard, "Is everything OK over here?", Wife says, " Don't worry about it, He's watching LSU."

I thought you said pre-internet??
I would say the good ole' Jerry Stovall draw play on 3rd and long

The end of the Chollie Mac era. Help Mac Pack. Signs in his yard.
Chollie Mac's offense towards the end. I believe the cheer was:
"Up the middle, up the middle, up the middle, punt!"
I personally think he was treated shabbily by the administration and a lot of the fans at the end. It's funny, one of the complaints was that he was too old; the game "had passed him by". I believe he was in his mid 50's. Younger than Les, Sabin, Pete Carroll. Not much older than Jimbo Fisher, who just got his 1st head coaching job! Look at Joe Pa & Bobby Bowden.
But the whole end of the Chollie Mac era from, say, 1974-79 woulda been fodder for the Rantards.
